UEP Social Justice Statement
We first and foremost acknowledge that as part of the Boulder and University of Colorado communities, “we occupy lands that are recognized by treaty as the territories of Indigenous Nations including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute peoples. Consciously or unconsciously, we currently benefit from the historic and ongoing injustices committed against the Native peoples of this land.” (Boulder Healing Hub)
We believe that we’re all connected and that relationships matter. Yet, despite this connectedness, the world and our experiences are not equitable. Thus, in the spirit of inquiry and understanding, we’re committed to exploring our individual and collective social identities and the power and privilege associated with those standpoints. Because we understand that educational environments replicate the inequities of the societies in which they’re located, we’re committed to recruiting and supporting students who are historically underrepresented in learning communities labeled “high-achieving” or “gifted.” We promote education for action, so that we may all be part of the healing of the aforementioned historical and ongoing injustices, and to make our campus, home communities and world a place where everyone can thrive. We pledge to not shy away from difficult conversations.
Equity in a Global Pandemic and CU’s DEI Action Plan
It’s the responsibility of every individual to make CU safe and welcoming for all campus community members at all times. This is even more critical during the current COVID-19 global pandemic. Additionally, as the vaccine rolls out, our community has a responsibility to be vigilant about access, availability and equitable distribution of the vaccine.
