Dr. Alderete’s research focuses on the causes and consequences of obesity and type 2 diabetes. This work has examined the effects of dietary factors, environmental exposures, and the gut microbiome on increased risk for obesity and insulin resistance in children and adolescents. Currently, Dr. Alderete is interested in determining whether obesity and/or insulin resistance are associated with increased exposure to air pollutants through alterations in gut microbiome. She has published her work in a number of journals including Diabetes, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Obesity, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Environmental Health, and Environmental Research. Her work is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
