The Pre-Engineering Program is designed to facilitate the successful transition of qualified first-year students in the College of Arts and Sciences into the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder. The program provides a structured pathway of CU-Boulder course work combined with academic advising support from both the College of Engineering and Applied Science and the College of Arts and Sciences.
Pre-Engineering students enroll in appropriate math and science courses during their first year of study to prepare them for a transfer to engineering. Pre-Engineering students are considered eligible for transfer once they have satisfactorily completed two semesters of calculus and two semesters of college-level general chemistry and/or calculus-based physics. Minimum grade and GPA requirements must be met to secure admission to the college. Most students can complete these requirements in three semesters, while some may do so in as few as two semesters.
Pre-Engineering students also enroll in the Introduction to Engineering course for their first semester to learn about the 13 undergraduate majors offered and the wide range of careers associated with those majors. In subsequent semesters, as space permits, students may be able to enroll in additional engineering courses such as an introductory computing or a first-year engineering projects course to further explore the world of engineering.
The Pre-Engineering Program specifically serves qualified students who initially applied for direct admission to the College of Engineering and Applied Science and were alternatively offered admission in the College of Arts and Sciences. Student who are not eligible for the Pre-Engineering Program can explore a potential transfer into the College of Engineering and Applied Science via Intra-University Transfer.
Beyond academics, Pre-Engineering students are encouraged to live on campus in one of the engineering-affiliated student communities. These include the Quadrangle Engineering & Sciences Living and Learning Community, the Sustainable by Design Residential Academic Program, and the Global Engineering Residential Academic Program. Additionally, Pre-Engineering students are encouraged to join engineering student organizations and societies and participate in college events such as Engineering Days.
