Experience CU Boulder arts and culture at the 4th annual Culture Crawl a fun and free event, open to all.

Drop by the Visual Arts Complex (VAC) to participate in a chalk art masterpiece with street painter Jennifer Chaparro. Student work will also be on display and attendees can meet representatives from Boulder's non-profit organization Open Studios, as well as chat with informative staff members from CU Study Abroad. This event is part of Arts Week at the VAC and the annual Culture Crawl.

Filmmaker and writer Karel Doing will share his research into film deterioration and his experiments with growing images. After working closely together with film archivists, Doing became fascinated with the effects created by fungi on nitrate film. This led him to do further research which eventually guided him toward the invention of the phytogram. Doing will talk about his process and his book Ruins and Resilience: the longevity of experimental film (Goldsmiths Press, 2024). Additionally, two of his films will be screened.

On Saturday, Sept. 28 at Farrand Field is the return of the Powwow to the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder). A powwow is a traditional gathering for intergenerational Native drumming, singing, dance and community building that celebrates rich ancestral histories and contemporary Native culture.

Doors will open at 8 a.m. and Grand Entry will begin at 11 a.m., and this is a substance-free event.

Citizen Fellow: Art as Archive and Memory

Citizen Fellow: Art as Archive and Memory offers a sampling of the past fifteen years of Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Fellows work and perspectives. This exhibition features artists who have inspired and centralized cultural consciousness and the impact of the NACF into their practice. They are of various cultural backgrounds whose creative possibilities have used NACF funding to produce works and dive into their practice. NACF has watched these artists and their transformative power validate how we view each other and our world.

A video program coinciding with Marie Lorenz’s exhibition “CONFLUENCE” will feature nine artists whose work informs Lorenz’s study of our relationship with territories, histories, ecosystems, habitats, and structures. Each artist pursues a unique form of observation, storytelling, and engagement with contested environments. The program includes artists who reimagine public space and those whose work explores the social and ecological implications of everyday things taken for granted. They highlight the capacity of art to transform our perception of shared landscapes and suggest new forms of visibility and action.

Intimacy with a (non) site
September 2024 - March 2026

For BMoCA’s InsideOut commission, González Barragán created a site-specific installation using cast-off gray Yule marble from the Yule Marble Quarry (Marble, Colorado). Positioned as a metaphor for the act of extraction, Intimacy with a (non) site references the female anatomy by evocatively threading a steel pipe through drilled holes, led by a phallic-shaped drill bit used in industrial coal mining. The artist’s intimate manipulation of the materials using hand tools further expresses commentary on the often violent and exploitative industrial methods, commodification, and transnational circulation of natural resources. She positions the inherent qualities of marble vein like lines and raw edges in conversation with spray paint and chainsaw marks—residual evidence of mine activity. And heat-forms the bends in the steel by hand using coal directly sourced from TwentyMile Coal Mine (Oak Creek, Colorado).

The BFA degree in Art Practices is a more specialized degree in studio art. It allows you to take a higher number of courses through the Art & Art History Department. Choose this degree if you like to make art at an intense level. Choose this degree if you want to create a personal portfolio, attend graduate school, want a career directly related to the arts, or are interested in pursuing a teaching career at the college level.
