The Pine Ridge region is an anomaly on the Plains: despite being far to the west of the area where dry land farming is supposed to be viable, avocational excavations in the 1940’s exposed a Plains Village house and produced corn.

Project Highlights

  • Excavations opened a Plains Village residential site that appeared to be underlain by a Late Woodland bison kill
  • Substantial excavation of a kiln that was subsequently reused as a trash dump
  • Geophysical prospecting planned in hopes of identifying at least one house
