Jennifer Leichliter
Student: Biological Anthropology

Jennifer Leichliter is a Ph.D. student studying paleoecology and hominin evolution during the Plio-Pleistocene in South Africa. During the Plio-Pleistocene several distinct lineages of hominins arose, coexisted, and went extinct. Jennifer is interested in:

  • Reconstructing the environments and ecosystems in which these hominins lived
  • Determining how the South African landscape has changed over the course of time
  • Understanding how these changes influenced hominin evolution.

Jennifer has spent three field seasons in South Africa conducting research with Dr. Matt Sponheimer in the Cradle of Humankind. This research focuses on paleoenvironmental reconstruction using small mammal fauna and stable isotope ecology from various important hominin-bearing localities.
