Dear Smead Aerospace Spring 2020 Graduating Students,

The Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences will recognize our Spring 2020 graduating class with a Virtual Graduation Ceremony that will post to our Aerospace Homepage on Friday, May 15th at 12:00 pm. To ensure a high-quality presentation amidst spotty internet service, this will be a pre-recorded video that will contain most of the components of a normal in-person graduation ceremony.

The ceremony includes our planned keynote from Smead Aerospace Alumnus, Dr. Jack Elston, CEO and Co-Founder, Black Swift Technologies, and the ceremony will follow the format of years past with the recognition of each graduate in the order of: PhD candidates, MS candidates, BS/MS candidate, and BS candidates, with special awards, citations, and recognitions. The detailed program is now posted below.

I am asking all May graduates and walk-onlys to respond to the form below so that we can properly honor you all with your own name card that will be displayed when your name is read that includes a picture of you along with an inspirational quote of your choice and/or a short sentence on your post-graduation plans, in lieu of walking across the stage. Your mailing address is requested in the form because we are sending you all a special-edition aerospace graduation mug as a small token of congratulations, which we hope to send in time for our ceremony, but may arrive a few weeks after.

Provide your information by EOD Wednesday, April 22, for the Smead Aerospace Virtual Ceremony here: https://forms.gle/qoCmp8dM4gkm5aiW8

If you previously RSVP’d to attend our in-person ceremony before it was cancelled, please still provide your information in the new form above. (Note: as a University production, the College reserves the right to edit or remove inappropriate content submissions, or add attribution when necessary.)

This has been a tumultuous several weeks as we close-out the 2019-20 academic year. While the department seeks to maintain rigor and expectations in our education and research enterprises, we recognize the need to maintain our unique community and culture—a community of learners and teachers, and a culture of inclusive excellence, respect, and caring. Yes, this spring’s graduation ceremony will be unlike any in the history of the department, however your Smead Aerospace Community is nevertheless excited to celebrate the Class of 2020 as you commence and continue your careers.

I would like to remind everyone that following our May 15th Virtual Graduation, Campus will hold its Virtual Commencement on Saturday, May 16th (time TBA). Keep a lookout for separate communications from Campus with that information.

On behalf of your Smead Aerospace Community, Congratulations, Class of 2020!

Brian M. Argrow

Dear CU Boulder Students, Faculty and Staff,

During this extraordinary time, we are committed to ensuring a safe and healthy environment, resulting in some very difficult decisions.

As with many institutions across the country, it is with great regret that we are announcing the cancellation of our in-person commencement on May 7, as well as all college, school and department-based recognition ceremonies, due to COVID-19.

You are likely aware of the unprecedented federal and state government restrictions on large public gatherings announced this week. With this in mind, and given the early date of our ceremonies this year and the uncertainty of travel restrictions for the families of our large population of out-of-state and international students, we have decided to announce the cancellation today. Most importantly, we want to do everything we can to ensure that all of our students, faculty, staff and their families remain safe and healthy.

In collaboration with the leadership of our colleges and schools, we are exploring virtual options that will enable our community to celebrate the latest class of CU Boulder graduates remotely, and we will follow up with more information and details as these plans develop. In the meantime, we encourage all students eligible to graduate this semester to apply for graduation via the Office of the Registrar by no later than April 30, 2020.

We deeply regret the cancellation of our in-person celebration of our graduates and their achievements, and we thank you once again for your understanding, patience and citizenship during this challenging time that requires all of us to apply flexibility and creativity in a variety of new ways as a community.

Please stay current on all campus updates at colorado.edu/coronavirus.
