Next Steps for New Student Welcome

What to Know

teaching circle in the parkThe transition from high school to college is an exciting, yet busy time. Several key pieces of information will be sent to you through both email and the postal service. Be sure that you read these materials, as they are your guidebook as you embark on your journey with CU-Boulder.

Selecting Courses

In order to know how to select courses for your first semester on campus, it is important to understand the overall structure of your degree.  The College of Arts and Sciences degree consists of 120 credit hours, made up of four parts.

  1. Minimum Academic Preparation Standards (MAPS) - are requirements we expect you to have completed in high school.  You will be able to complete any deficiencies in college.
  2. The Core Curriculum - incorporates the general education courses deemed necessary to ensure a well-rounded and broad exposure to the disciplines that make up a liberal arts degree.
  3. Your Major - will be your focused area of study within the College of Arts and Sciences.
  4. Electives - are courses that do not fulfill MAPS, core, or major requirements. Think of them as everything else you are interested in exploring.  The number of electives available to you will depend on your major.

You will select courses for your first semester that fall into some or all of these broad categories.  The key to a successful schedule is balance!

The Degree Audit

Your degree audit is a tool that lists your remaining and completed degree requirements and helps you track your progress toward graduation. You can view the degree audit online through MyCUinfo.  It evaluates how each of your courses fits into your degree, gives you links to course descriptions in areas you still need to complete, and lets you view “what if” audits to explore how your courseworks fits into other majors.  You can view your degree audit to find out how your AP, IB, or transfer course work is fitting into your degree.  You will also see how each course in your new schedule fits in.  You should always run a new degree audit after making adjustments to your schedule to ensure the changes apply to your degree as you intended.

Degree audits are available through MyCUinfo:

  1. Log in to MyCUinfo.colorado.edu
  2. Click the “Student” tab
  3. Click the “Degree Audit” button
  4. Log in to the Degree Audit page

Choosing Courses

students attending a lectureProbably the most exciting part of entering college is choosing the courses you will be taking. CU-Boulder has thousands of great courses, and many in topics that you probably haven't heard of before.  Keep an open mind and follow your passion.  It is a good idea to balance your specific degree and major requirements with course topics that intrigue you.  Each student’s schedule is unique and depends on prior academic performance and future goals.

Below you can access a list of courses that are typically offered each fall - this list represents courses that are appropriate for first-year students that are likely to have spaces open. Once you begin your career at CU-Boulder you will be able to search for all available classes on your own through MyCUinfo.  Take the time to review the degree and major requirements of your chosen field, then choose at least two courses from each A&S core category that interest you. Some classes fill up during a given session so it is always wise to have an alternate or two in mind before registering.  Students, on average, take fifteen credit hours per term to stay on track to graduate in four years.  You will have the opportunity to review your course schedule with an advisor if you have any questions or concerns.

Once you have your Identikey and password for MyCUinfo, it will be possible to run a degree audit for your chosen major, as well as any others that interest you by selecting the "What If" option.

Though you may think that an advisor's role is to help students register for classes, that's not quite right.  In fact, students register entirely independently, using their degree audit as a guide. Advising is not required prior to registering in most cases. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor before registering, but only to share ideas and take advantage of the advisor's vast knowledge base and ideas about creating a well-rounded academic experience. Students will select courses that meet remaining requirements by reading their degree audit and selecting the options that sound most interesting.  Confirming with their advisor that they're on the right path with their selections is always a good idea.
