AUL has been performing accessibility tests since early 2014, and our experience has lead us to focus on two types of work which we can do best and where we can provide the most value to the university, quick reviews and in-depth tests:
A quick review is performed by a single accessibility professional, usually with a single screen reader. It lacks the thoroughness of an in-depth test and is designed to help the site or application manager identify areas of concern regarding digital accessibility early on in the development or procurement process. The results of such a review should not be used as conclusive evidence nor shared with external audiences. The turnaround can be two or three days, or one or two weeks for larger projects.
An in-depth test involves testing by both blind and low-vision testers on one or more platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) with a variety of screen readers and magnifiers. Once testing is complete, the lab provides an in-depth report documenting the findings and relating them to the WCAG 2.0 standard. The usual turnaround here is several weeks, and can be several months for particularly large projects (for example, Google Apps for Education or Desire2Learn). Turnaround will also vary based on the length of our testing queue and availability of our student testers.
