The philosophy of the Technology, Arts and Media (TAM) program is to integrate creative production, critical thinking and technical skills. TAM teaches a diverse and robust skill­set that is not confined to specific disciplines like “graphic design” or “digital art.” The program challenges students to become aware of the various disciplinary perspectives in the field and to contextualize their work accordingly.

Graduates of the program demonstrate a mastery of creative technology as well as the necessary technical, theoretical and historical perspectives that are crucial to the development of new functionalities, aesthetics and innovations in the field. They are adept at assessing the intersections of technology with other practices and areas of study, and they can think creatively about technology’s impact on the world.

Undergraduate Opportunities

The Bachelor of Science in Technology, Arts and Media (BS­TAM) offers a broad trans-disciplinary curriculum that integrates technological skills with a critical, theoretical and historical understanding of technology, media and the arts. The curriculum infuses creativity into technology and integrates a technically rigorous education with critical thinking, problem solving and creative production. The program attracts designers, makers, tinkerers and builders, including those with unorthodox perspectives and unconventional approaches to technology. It produces graduates who have a diverse and adaptable skillset and are ready to address the opportunities and challenges of the twenty­first century.

The BS­TAM program incorporates the College of Engineering and Applied Science “Flexible First Year” and comprises a minimum of 128 and a maximum of 133 total credit hours of course work in several categories. Courses in the program are small and studio­-based in order to encourage group work and collaboration. They stress knowledge and expertise in technology foundation and development, and they help students gain an interdisciplinary perspective on IT and society.
