Materials science and engineering concerns the development and engineering of new materials. The field requires a strong grasp of both physics and chemistry, as it examines how atoms are combined in order to create new compounds, structures and properties. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are also important aspects of materials science and engineering, since developments in computers, airplanes and medical devices are often based in experiments at the molecular level. Work in materials science and engineering is responsible for a staggering number of advancements in technology and medicine, and graduates in the program are well-prepared for careers in aerospace, biotechnology and materials, electronics and telecommunications.
Materials science is an interdisciplinary program that brings together faculty from across the CU Boulder campus and offers students a wealth of expertise and research in materials science and engineering. Work being done by faculty in the department is internationally recognized, and students are exposed to research in fields such as space science/aerospace engineering, energy systems, renewable and sustainable energy, biotechnology, biomedicine and geosciences.
The program provides a rigorous education in materials science and engineering and the fundamental physics, engineering, chemistry and biology that underlie the discipline. Educational goals are achieved through both course work and training in crossdisciplinary research supervised by one or more science and engineering faculty members. The program offers six unique tracks of study: electronic, magnetic and photonics materials; soft materials; structural materials; materials for energy; biomaterials; and computational materials science.
