The Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS) conducts research and training into cognitive processes and how they can shape the world around us. From neuroscience to artificial intelligence, our scientists are changing what we know about how the mind works and how we interact with the world. Our interdisciplinary approach encompasses psychology, neuroscience, education, linguistics, computer science, philosophy, speech/hearing science, information science and more. Our graduate programs prepare students for the grand challenges facing the 21st century. You will work with world class scientists, and learn how to lead innovation using the unique knowledge, skills, and ability developed in our programs.
Graduate students who are interested in these ICS programs must first be admitted to a CU Boulder graduate program. Students in good academic standing can then make a formal application for admission to the Certificate or PhD Program (ICS application, unofficial transcript, and plan of study).

Degrees and Certificates Offered
Certificate in Cognitive Science
This Graduate Certificate allows students to earn a certification in cognitive science while completing their graduate degree, promoting cross-disciplinary studies to better equip students with a wide understanding of all that cognitive science can encompass.
Certificate in Human Language Technology
The explosive growth of the web and the vast improvements in computing power in the last decade have led to a strong need for education and research in human language technology. This certificate provides a rich and broad background for students interested in computational tools for human language processing.
Cognitive Science Combined PhD
This dual degree allows students to earn a PhD in cognitive science while simultaneously completing their doctorate in one of ICS’s participating academic units, exploiting state-of-the-art methods to develop innovative research.
Cognitive Neuroscience Combined PhD
This “triple” degree program allows students to earn a PhD in three areas simultaneously: cognitive science, neuroscience, and their home department. A special course schedule allows for timely completion while equipping students with the interdisciplinary training needed to become a leader in the field.
