    Position Title:			Computer Technician

    THE ORGANIZATION
    The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education - WICHE - is a
    regional agency established in the 1950's through an interstate compact.
    WICHE was created to promote and to facilitate resource sharing,
    collaboration, and cooperative planning among western states, their
    colleges and universities, and their systems of higher education.  By
    constructing cooperative arrangements and developing and sharing
    information, WICHE strives to help states and their residents to meet
    the needs for an educated workforce.  Member states are: Alaska,
    Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New
    Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and
    Wyoming.
    THE UNIT
    The Information Technology unit, a branch of Administrative Services,
    provides comprehensive support and technical assistance for WICHE's
    local area network (LAN - Windows 2000 4.0), micro-computers, and
    Internet connections (e-mail, FTP, World Wide Web, and listservs).
    Emphasis is placed on the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting,
    and repairs for the LAN, web site (www.wiche.edu), computers, printers
    and all related hardware and software.  IT Services also provides
    technical assistance, general training, and insights for future
    computer, LAN, and Internet-related enhancements, and basic assistance
    for WICHE's Nortel Norstar telephone system.
    Almost every WICHE staff member has access to their own personal
    computer, and all WICHE computers (approximately 42 users) are connected
    to our LAN.  All of our desktop computers are IBM-compatible Pentium
    clones (most with 512MB of RAM) running under Windows XP.  In addition,
    we have Pentium-level notebook computers used primarily by staff who
    frequently travel.
    WICHE's current primary applications software standards include MS Word
    for word processing, MS Excel and Lotus 1-2-3 for spreadsheet, MS Access
    for database, Dream Weaver for web authoring, Netscape and Internet
    Explorer for web browser, PageMaker for desktop publishing, MS
    PowerPoint for presentations, and MS Outlook for electronic mail.  In
    addition, we have Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus as our primary network
    anti-virus package, and Surf Control Spam filtering for e-mail.
    WICHE has a direct connection to the Internet utilizing a T-l line from
    AT&T.  We have our own Cisco router (the model 2600 with dual ethernet
    and IP router software).  All WICHE staff have their own Internet e-mail
    address and utilize our Internet e-mail server running under Windows
    2000.  WICHE's e-mail server runs on an HP NetServer.
    In addition, WICHE's LAN provides staff with access to high quality HP
    laser printers, remote dial-in access, and an electronic fax server with
    FACSys software.
    The Position
    The Computer Technician provides assistance to the Information
    Technology Manager in supporting hardware and software for WICHE's LAN,
    micro-computers, printers, cabling, and all Internet capabilities.
    Primary responsibilities include: the comprehensive set-up, support,
    troubleshooting, maintenance, and security of WICHE's personal
    computers, printers, and software; repairs and upgrades; basic
    networking support, including configuring PC's for LAN connectivity and
    managing user accounts; maintenance of records/inventories related to
    systems; diagnosis/isolation of system problems; preventative
    maintenance; system and procedure documentation; and providing technical
    assistance and expertise for all hardware, cabling and software.
    Position Specifications
    Required:
    1. Experience and ability in configuring, troubleshooting, and performing
    repairs for IBM-compatible computers and printers, including
    connectivity to Windows NT LAN.  Familiarity with 10/100-Base-T networks
    and multiple protocols (Netbeui, TCP/IP).  Working knowledge of MS
    Windows operating systems, Ethernet 10/100Base-T topologies, general
    applications software programs and related utilities.
    2. Demonstrated ability to analyze and correct system
    problems/malfunctions.
    3. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective and
    cooperative working relationships internally and externally.
    4. Solid organizational and time-management skills and ability to
    closely follow instructions.
    5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and perform under
    pressure.
    6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in
    writing.
    7. Demonstrated ability to lift and carry computer equipment which
    weighs up to 40 pounds.
    8. Ability to maintain a valid Colorado driver's license.
    Preferred:     
    1. Proficiency with all of the software packages mentioned previously.
    2. Experience in developing and presenting software training programs to
    users.
    3. Experience performing basic troubleshooting of telephone systems.
    Computer Equipment and Software: Pentium-3 desktop personal computer
    operating on a local area network (LAN) with laser printers and direct
    access to the Internet (MS Outlook for e-mail and Netscape for the web
    browser).  WICHE's word processing software standard is MS Word;
    spreadsheet software package is MS Excel; and our primary database

    Organizational Responsibility: Reports directly to the IT Manager.
    Benefits: (The following benefits are based on full-time exempt-level
    staff.  For this position, actual benefits will be pro-rated based on
    0.50 FTE.) 12 days of vacation per year; 12 days of sick leave per year;
    11 paid holidays per year, 3 personal business leave days per year.
    Participation in WICHE's fully vested TIAA-CREF retirement plan is
    required after one year's employment, with WICHE matching the staff
    member's contribution of 3%, 4% or 5% of salary at a 2:1 ratio.  Social
    Security (FICA).  Comprehensive health insurance; WICHE pays 80% of the
    premium for single coverage, the staff member pays a portion of the
    premium for dependent coverage.  Comprehensive Health Care Benefit of
    $550.00 per year (pro-rated for those employed for less than six months
    of the year).  Dental insurance.  Life insurance equal to one and
    one-half times the staff member's annual salary (maximum coverage of
    $75,000).  Participation in WICHE's comprehensive group total disability
    insurance plan through TIAA is required by all staff working 0.75 or
    more.  The associated premiums are partially paid by WICHE.  Eligible to
    participate in WICHE's Section 125 and 129 flexible benefits program
    (Choice Benefits).
