Information technology is an integral part of the Boulder campus, which now has over 61,000 e-mail accounts for students, faculty, staff, and affiliates, provides the majority of student services through a secure web portal, provides services to faculty and staff through the same web portal, and hosts tens of thousands of computing devices connected to the campus network.
Wireless Internet access is available in a majority of the buildings on campus including Norlin Library, the UMC, and most major classroom buildings. A wireless expansion project, which is nearing completion, will provide complete coverage in all academic buildings. An updated list of wireless-covered buildings is available at www.colorado.edu/its/wireless/coverage.
All campus residence halls are equipped with either 100-megabit Ethernet connections or wireless access; most rooms will soon have both.
The new ATLAS Building opened in fall 2006, providing all faculty and instructors with the opportunity to use the latest instructional technologies in their teaching. Criteria for teaching in the ATLAS building include effective use of technology and distance collaboration.
In addition to the ATLAS Building, CU-Boulder has over 100 technology-equipped classrooms. Each technology classroom and lecture hall contains, at minimum, a VCR, overhead projector, video projection unit (TV or data projector), and Internet connection.
The campus has over 1500 computers/terminals available on campus for general student use including 95 Internet kiosks and 46 computer labs.
Approximately 98 percent of all incoming freshmen bring computers to campus. The campus strongly recommends that freshmen have their own computers.
The ITS Media lab, a full-service digital media development facility, provides a resource for the acquisition, editing, and delivery of digital content for projects associated with campus teaching or research. The lab, located on the third floor of the ATLAS building, is staffed with experts and stocked with a full suite of tools. Make an appointment for the Media Lab by calling 303-492-8804 or send an email to medialab@colorado.edu.
The IT Service Center is the campus’s first contact point for IT questions and issues, handling phone calls, email, and walk-in requests for service and support. The Center handles 1000-1500 calls per typical week during the semester.
The creation and delivery of technology-centered, multidisciplinary curricular programs, available to any CU undergraduate student, is a key component of the ATLAS Institute. The Technology, Arts and Media (TAM) certificate is the initial offering within this curricular program. TAM enrolls over 200 students, the majority of whom are women. The program provides instruction in graphic and conceptual design, media and societal analysis, and specific computer programming, graphic interface and digital recording skills.
CUConnect, CU-Boulder’s secure web portal, gives students, faculty and staff one place to access a wide variety of university resources. Students can access class schedules, grades, financial aid, bills, address updates, announcements and more through CUConnect. CUConnect provides faculty with access to their class rosters, on-line grading, research and academic resources, and much more. All authorized CU-Boulder employees can use CUConnect to view their pay advices, announcements, news, and a wide variety of resources pertinent to their jobs.
Over 28,000 CU-Boulder students are enrolled in at least one course using the campus’s online learning management system, CULearn, which can be used to share class work and materials, including quizzes and homework assignments, via the internet.
At least 70% of faculty members have one or more course web sites. Most of those feature syllabi, exercises and problem sets; many also have online tests and quizzes, as well as extensive course materials.
About 5,000 students in 60 courses are using “clickers” – devices similar to a TV remote control – to send information that is tabulated and displayed to the entire class on a projection screen. The system allows for active participation by all students and provides immediate feedback to the instructor and students about any misunderstandings in the material covered.
