Dear Members of the CU Boulder Community,

Our thoughts are with all the people, and especially our fellow Buffs, from the Gulf Coast area affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Our campus offers a safety net for students, faculty, and staff in times of distress, and we encourage anyone in need to seek campus resources. Available services include Counseling and Psychiatric Services, Student Support and Case Management, the Office of Victim Assistance, Student Legal Services and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program to name a few.

Many are wondering what they can do to support from Colorado. Before you donate physical items, please review this article, "When disaster relief brings anything but relief." As our mission states, "through an educational framework of equity and inclusion, we develop socially responsible student leaders who understand, advocate for, and provide services to meet campus and community needs," it is important that those who wish to help, listen to the affected communities and send help in the ways that communities in and around Houston, are asking for help. We are working on a list of ways you can donate directly to organizations who are supporting recovery efforts. Check back this week for more information on what the Volunteer Resource Center and CU Boulder will be doing to collect and send needed supplies.

I Want to Help with Harvey Relief

Please forward to anyone interested in helping. We are here to meet with and talk with students about how to lend a helping hand.

In service,

The Volunteer Resource Center Staff

Best Ways to Support Immediately:

  1. Donate money. This is the single best way you can support immediately.
  2. Donate blood locally. Colorado is sending blood to Houston and will need to replenish their supply. You can donate on campus this week at the CU Boulder Rec Center. Walk-ins are welcome. Thursday, August 31 from 9:00 am - 2:30 pm.
  3. Southwest.com: Donate your flight points to send volunteers and other relief workers to Texas.
  4. Stay tuned for a possible supply drive coordinated by the Volunteer Resource Center and other campus departments. Sign up below to assist with relief efforts and to receive information on what CU Boulder is doing to support impacted communities.

Reminders Before You Donate:

If you’re interested in helping with Harvey, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • To help voluntary/non-profit organizations on the ground, don’t drop off goods without checking what’s needed first.
  • Cash is the best way of donating and offers the greatest flexibility in getting the most-needed resources.
  • For more information on how you can help and a list of nonprofit organizations, visit https://www.nvoad.org/.
