Project Inform - San Francisco, California

Students on this trip will travel out to San Francisco tow ork with various organizations on HIV/AIDS issues, awareness and education. Volunteers will work with Project Open Hand in food preparation and serving, the San Francisco AIDS Project on community awareness and activism, and the Project Inform on HIV issues pertaining to the outcome of the presidential election. Students will stay at the famous American Youth Hostel in downtown San Francisco. This trip provides a unique opportunity to work with HIV/AIDS awareness and education and places students at the center of the policy forming debate concerning this issue. This is the first time we have had a trip to San Francisco to work on HIV/AIDS issues and is a driving trip.

 

Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless - Cincinnati, Ohio

Ten volunteers will stay in Cincinnati and work with the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless, a program comprised of various organizations committed to work on hunger, homelessness, urban poverty and racism in the Cincinnati area. Work will include meal preparation and serving, tutoring GED students and teaching young children, and socializing with residents and community members. Volunteers will also participate in education and analytical reflection discussions concerning their service work, as well as having the opportunity to hear speakers from around the Cincinnati area on a variety of topics concerning poverty and homelessness. This trip provides a unique opportunity to examine homelessness and urban issues that facy many U.S. cities and is a brand new trip for Alternative Breaks. This is a driving trip.

 

Once Upon a Time - Maryville, Tennessee

Alternative Breaks participants will road trip out to Maryville, Tennessee to work with Once Upon a Time, an organization whose mission focuses on the Cherokee Nation, Native American issues, and rural Appalachia and helping to restore and preserve the rich natural environment in this area. Volunteers on this trip will participate in a variety of service projects, including one day of trail maintenance in the Cherokee National Forest, two days working with the Snowbird Cherokee Community, one day of homesteading activities, and half a day in the wildnerness survival skills program. In addition to these service projects, participants will have the opportunity to learn Cherokee stories, language, history and culture, go on a day and night hike, and tell "Mountain Man" stories around the campfire. This is a brand-new trip for CU Alternative Breaks.

 

Teach for America - Chicago, Illinois

Trip participants will road trip out to Chicago to work with Teach for America both in and out of the classroom. Volunteers will have the oportunity to work with Teach for America staff in learning about the organization and the educational issues specific to the Chicago area. Students will also have the unique experience of working with teachers and kids in elementary and middle school classrooms. Participants will be able to see the inner workings of Teach for AMerica and the specifics of their program in Chicago, as well as form close bonds through working with students. This is a driving trip and is the second year that CU Alternative Breaks has worked with Teach for America.

 

Camp Campbell - Boulder Creek, California

The Camp Campbell Outdoor Science School is a unique location for students of the greater San Jose area to learn about nature and the environment in a very hands-on manner. Located in the redwood forests outside of San Jose, Camp Campbell is a gorgeious location and provides amazing opportunities for volunteers and campers alike. Volunteers will work as camp counselors for the week and assist teachers in educating students about the environment and field research. As camp counselors, participants will be in charge of a cabin of students and will serve as mentors to them for their week of service. This is an amazing opportunity to work with kids and spend a week in a beautiful place!

 


Plateau Restoration -
Moab, Utah

Want to spend a week hiking, camping and working in the deserts around Moab? This is the trip for you! Volunteers will drive out to Moab, Utah to work with Plateau Restoration and Conservation Adventures on trail building, environmental restoration and conservation education. Participants will spend the week camping and working with a former CU professor in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Work is all environmental in focus and includes trail building, maintenance, invasive species removal, re-vegetation efforts and river cleanup. This is an extremely exciting trip opportunity and is the third year that CU has worked with Plateau Restoration.

 

Catalina Island Conservancy - Catalina Island, California

Alternative Breakers will spend a week on beautiful Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Los Angeles working with the Catalina Island Conservancy, an organization that is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the land and waters of the island. Participants will camp with the Catalina Conservancy and participate in a variety of environmental projects, including trail building and repair, invasive species removal, landscaping, and environmental education. This will be a driving trip and is the first tme CU has worked with Catalina Island Conservancy.



Hands on New Orleans -
New Orleans, Louisianna

Participants headed to New Orleans will volunteer with Hands on New Olreans, an organization created after hurricanes Katrina and Rita that aims to rebuild and restore New Orleans, and the greater Gulf Coast region. Disaster relief work will include rebuilding homes in the city. Hands on New Orleans is in constant need of volunteers to complete the overwhelming volume o service projects that the area is faced with. Volunteers will be staying at Camp Hope, a volunteer camp founded after the storm and sponsored by AmeriCorps. Participants will have the opportunity to do construction work on the houses, as well as experiencing New Orleans culture, working with other volunteer groups from around the country, and forming close friendships with the residents of New Orleans. This is CU's third trip to the Gulf Coast region and participants will be flying to New Orleans.
