The University of Colorado Boulder is educating first-time renters on the basics of leasing and living off campus during the seminar “Living Off-Campus: Everything First Timers Need to Know.” Sessions will be held Jan. 15 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Jan. 16 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in University Memorial Center room 425.
For the past four years, the CU-Boulder Off-Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations office and CU Money Sense have partnered to offer students a comprehensive look at the Boulder rental market. The seminar is designed for students moving out of the residence halls and experiencing independent living for the first time.
“The presentation helps students navigate the rental market by identifying housing options, popular neighborhoods and rent averages, and explaining common lease terms such as ‘joint and several liability,’ ” said Michelle Rangel, communications and marketing coordinator with Off-Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations.
Students also will hear about the pros and cons of renting in Boulder and living with roommates, as well as university resources that are available to help students find housing.
In addition to finding an apartment and paying rent, students will have other bills when they live off campus. CU Money Sense will provide useful tools and examples for creating a budget and managing finances.
“Students are eager to live on their own, but they don’t always calculate the full cost of living off campus,” said Susie Jacobs, director of CU Money Sense. “Students in previous sessions said that the financial education they received was invaluable, and found the information on when and where to look to be a helpful tool in beginning their search.”
In addition, Wardenburg Health Center will join the session this year to offer tips for healthy living and eating well on a tight budget.
