The University of Colorado at Boulder will highlight the breadth of artistic and cultural resources available on campus through a variety of free and low-cost events during Arts and Culture Week Sept. 19-25.
One of this year's highlights is the public dedication of CU-Boulder's new Visual Arts Complex, including the grand opening of the new CU Art Museum, on Sept. 24. Beginning at noon and continuing through 6:30 p.m., the dedication event will feature the opening of the inaugural exhibitions in the new gallery space.
"This is a major cultural addition to support the educational mission of our campus," said Lisa Tamiris Becker, director of the CU Art Museum. The day's events will include the openings of the "archiTECHtonica" and "Peter Wegner: Wall-to-Wall-to-Wall" gallery exhibits, a performance of "Dwelling," an immersive, site-specific performance work at noon, and a public dedication ceremony at 3:30 p.m. on the plaza in front of the Visual Arts Complex.
Throughout the week, exhibits across campus include "Ground Game: Paintings On & Off the Wall" at the University Memorial Center Art Gallery, "Stages: 50 Years of Theatre at CU" and "The Art of Willis Pyle" at the CU Heritage Center in Old Main, and "Reaching Deep" in the (Re)Vision art space in the Dennis Small Cultural Center in the UMC. A closing reception for the "Ground Game" exhibit in the UMC Art Gallery will be held on Sept. 23, at 4:30 p.m.
Music performances for Arts and Culture Week begin Sept. 19 with a free guest alumni recital in the newly remodeled Grusin Music Hall in the Imig Music Building. Stephen Buckley will perform on double bass, accompanied by Margaret McDonald and Sara Parkinson on piano.
Lectures and spoken-word events during the week include "Telling Tales: Asian, African, Latino, Native and Other Folktales," an event featuring CU students reading and discussing their favorite stories on Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. in the Center for Multicultural Affairs Lounge, room 118 in Willard Hall. Tuesday evening will feature a Visiting Artist lecture from Korean photographer Yeondoo Jung at 7 p.m., in room 1B20 of the Visual Arts Complex.
Other events include four screenings from the International Film Series, featuring nine animated shorts from around the world. The "Nine Nation Animation" showings on Sept. 23 and 24 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. are free to CU-Boulder students with a valid ID. The Dennis Small Cultural Center will host a Woodblocking Workshop on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m., and the ATLAS Institute will host performances of the multimedia dance performance "Disappear Here" on Sept. 24 and 25, at 8 p.m. in the ATLAS Black Box theatre.
Arts and Culture Week is presented through the cooperation of the Arts and Culture Roundtable of CU-Boulder, in recognition of the student fee funding support that is vital for cultural institutions on the Boulder campus.
