The University of Colorado at Boulder's 2008 Homecoming festivities begin on Wednesday, Oct. 1, with a new "Ultimate Fan" competition at CU's Old Main Chapel and end Sunday with a community cleanup at several city locations.
"Go for the Gold" is the theme for Homecoming 2008, in honor of CU's and Boulder County's many current and past Olympians. This year's parade will feature Jenny Barringer as grand marshal, at least 20 Olympian marshals and three faculty marshals, chosen by the student body as the best teachers on campus.
Professors Abderrahman Aissa, Patti Adler, Joe Berta and Ty Tashiro are the 2008 Teacher Recognition Award Recipients. The award is one of the only faculty awards given by students. Aissa, Adler's son and Berta will attend the Homecoming parade.
At least 20 Olympians are planning to attend the parade, including such luminaries as Jimmie Heuga, Billy Kidd, Frank Shorter, Davis Phinney, Jacob Heilveil and Shayne and Alan Culpepper.
The Homecoming parade begins Friday at 5:15 p.m. on the Hill and will feature a number of floats from CU residence halls, student groups, Greek organizations and the community at large.
A pep rally with football Coach Dan Hawkins, athletes, the Pep Band, cheerleaders and the CU mascot Chip will follow the parade at about 5:45 p.m. on the Hill. A free concert featuring RX Bandits and warm-up acts Hearts of Palm and The Swayback begins at Farrand Field at 7 p.m. The Pearl Street Stampede also will commence at 7 p.m., as it normally does on home game weekends.
A campus and Hill cleanup, sponsored by the Colorado Creed, is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at Farrand Field for instructions. Food will be furnished afterward to all cleanup volunteers, compliments of Abo's on the Hill, Cheba Hut, The Sink and Snarf's. Shipping on the Hill coordinated the food donations.
Athletic contests include the Tuesday, Sept. 30, Women's Golf Memorial Invitational at the Omni in Broomfield and Saturday's 5 p.m. football game against the Texas Longhorns at Folsom Field. All the parade marshals will be honored at halftime.
Major sponsors for the 2008 Homecoming events include the Camera newspaper, University of Colorado Student Union, CU Arts and Sciences Student Government, city of Boulder's University Hill General Improvement District, CU Program Council, CU Housing and Dining Services, CU Athletics and Student Affairs. Other sponsors include James Travel Points, Tebo Development, PEH Architects, Pasta Jays, CU Book Store, Hotel Boulderado, Hill Alliance, Southwest Pipeline and the Boulder Outlook Hotel.
