The University of Colorado at Boulder tied for 26th in the 2000 ranking of the nations top public four-year institutions in U.S. News & World Reports annual Best Colleges issue, moving up from 31st in 1999.
CU-Boulder was tied with the Colorado School of Mines, Indiana University-Bloomington, the University of California-Santa Cruz, the University of Delaware, Virginia Tech and Miami University of Oxford, Ohio.
The nations top five public universities in the latest U.S. News rankings were the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Virginia tied for first, followed by the University of California-Los Angeles, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, tied for third.
In the 2000 ranking of the nations top 228 universities, public and private, Princeton University ranked first, followed by Harvard University and Yale University tied for second. The California Institute of Technology ranked fourth and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked fifth.
U.S. News & World Report ranked only engineering, business and pharmacy programs this year. Many other CU-Boulder programs are nationally competitive.
The CU-Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science's undergraduate program was ranked 27th out of 182 such programs and departments offering doctoral degrees. CU-Boulder was tied with seven other universities. Within the college, the department of aerospace engineering was tied for 11th with the University of Maryland-College Park, and the chemical engineering and civil engineering departments each were ranked 22nd in the nation.
The CU-Boulder College of Business and Administration undergraduate program was tied for 41st out of 327 programs in the nation with eight other colleges and universities. The general management program within the college was tied for 44th with four other colleges and universities.
The rankings were based on factors such as the institutions academic reputation, student retention, faculty resources, student selectivity and financial resources.
CU-Boulder is tied for 23rd among Association of American Universities public institutions.
