Whether people know it or not, they’re using photonic technology dozens of times each day.

Photonics – lasers, sensors and optics – are present in computers, microwave ovens, telephones, clock radios and cars.

Another little known fact is that Colorado is becoming a hub of photonic manufacturing.

• Denver’s Lockheed Martin uses the technology in its Titan II expendable launch system.

• Boulder’s Lexmark International uses it in inkjet and laser printers.

• Denver’s Rose Biomedical Research makes optoelectronic devices for the medical profession.

• Boulder’s Biostar makes kits used to detect infectious diseases.

• Windsor’s Eastman Kodak uses the technology in manufacturing its film, paper and lithographic plates.

Keeping up with the technology and those who use it has just gotten easier with the publication of the Colorado Photonics Directory – a listing of the state’s photonics organizations and federal laboratories.

The directory, published by the Business Advancement Center of the College of Business and Administration at the University of Colorado at Boulder, also provides an analysis of this rapidly growing industry.

“It’s important that businesses in this industry know about and use photonics suppliers from this state,” said Gary Horvath, marketing analyst at CU’s Business Advancement Center.

The directory is intended for use by people who are looking for jobs in this high-tech field; government and private organizations and individuals committed to increasing Colorado’s export market; businesses looking for suppliers; and organizations hoping to provide contract-based services to these businesses.

The 119-page directory is published by the Business Advancement Center, College of Business and Administration, University of Colorado at Boulder. The cost is $30. To order:
