CU-Boulder alumna gives $2 million to launch endowed chair in theater

 

When a young caller for the University of Colorado Boulder’s annual giving program asked Roe Green a decade ago if she would consider increasing her $100 annual gift to $150, he was the first to get the hint that Green might become a key part of the theater program from which she’d graduated in 1970.

“I told the caller, ‘Oh, I think I’d like to give more,’ ” recalled Green.

In a day and age when the arts are often overlooked by those seeking more “career-oriented” pursuits, Green—who is on numerous boards including the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Advisory Council and the honorary board of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival—stands up for the importance of theater. “Theater helps in all walks of life,” Green says. “It gives you an opportunity to speak in front of people. What makes us human are the arts.”

Colorado to see continued moderate growth in 2012, forecasts CU economist

The Colorado economy continues to grow at a modest pace in 2012, positioning the state among the healthier in growth nationally, according to economist Richard Wobbekind of the University of Colorado Boulder’s Leeds School of Business. Midway through the year, Colorado’s job growth rate is up to about 1.6 percent -- a gain of about 35,000 jobs in 2012 if the pace holds steady.

Colorado business leaders’ optimism drops according to CU Leeds School Index

 

Colorado business leaders are less optimistic going into the third quarter than last quarter, according to the most recent quarterly Leeds Business Confidence Index, or LBCI, released today by the University of Colorado Boulder’s Leeds School of Business.

The LBCI’s reading slid from 62.2 in the second quarter to 53.6 in the third, but remained higher than the 10-year average for the index and above the critical neutral mark of 50. A reading greater than 50 indicates positive expectations, while one lower than 50 indicates negative expectations.

Class act: CU students put a fresh face on math and science education

In an afterschool class of budding scientists, planting vegetable seeds becomes a lesson in how plants grow, cleverly disguised as an afternoon of playing in the dirt.

7 CU-Boulder students win Fulbright grants for 2012-13

Seven University of Colorado Boulder graduate students and alumni will go abroad during the 2012-13 academic year to pursue a variety of studies, research and teaching projects as grantees of the prestigious Fulbright program.

Their proposed subjects range from exploring desertification knowledge in Mali and the impact of collaboration with a foreign development agency, to studying medieval Islamic philosophy in Egypt and its potential to inform debates in Anglo-American moral philosophy.
