Bardfest 2013 offers both tradition and twists

The 56th annual season of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival will feature a classic lineup — a comedy, a tragedy, a history — alongside a hilarious Shakespeare sendup and a return engagement of an Off-Broadway hit.

But if anything, expect the unexpected, as two veterans and two of CSF’s favorite comic actors take the helm and offer their own visions, from the exotic to the traditional.

When research meets music: BLOrk

Interdisciplinary discovery doesn’t always happen in the lab. Sometimes it integrates technology and musicians in an ensemble setting to provide live interaction, as in the case of the Boulder Laptop Orchestra (BLOrk). 

After computer science doctoral student Charles Dietrich and Associate Professor John Gunther of the College of Music met at a campus STEM poster presentation in the fall of 2012, the encounter led to new artistic collaboration through the College of Music’s BLOrk ensemble.

Hitting the right note with Robert Cloutier

Tuning pianos is an art. Robert Cloutier is the artist who keeps the College of Music sounding spectacular. In the first two-thirds of his 34-year career, Cloutier, an expert piano technician specializing in concert preparation of Steinway grand pianos, earned a national reputation working with a who’s who list of musicians and Hollywood movie and recording studios.

National search for CU-Boulder College of Music dean launched

University of Colorado Boulder Provost Russell L. Moore today announced the formation of a search committee to lead a national search for a new dean of the College of Music. Jim Williams, dean of the Libraries, will chair the committee.

Dan Sher, who announced his resignation in August, will complete his 20th year as dean of the College of Music in June 2013 and then return to teaching in the college.

CU Opera performs Brundibar at Colorado Music Festival

CU Opera provided student vocalists for the lead roles in the Colorado Music Festival’s presentation of Hans Krasa’s “Brundibar," June 28-29.

CU music Professor Patrick Mason to receive 2012 Hazel Barnes Prize

Patrick Mason, a professor of voice at the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Music, has been selected to receive the 2012 Hazel Barnes Prize. The prize is the highest faculty recognition for teaching and research awarded by the university.

Mason will receive an engraved university medal and $20,000, the largest single faculty award funded by CU-Boulder. He will be recognized at spring commencement on May 11 and at a reception in his honor in the fall.
