CU-Boulder students, faculty will fete outgoing music dean on May 1 and 2

After 20 years as dean of the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music, Daniel P. Sher will step away from the post in June — but he isn’t going quietly.

First, student musicians at the college will dedicate their performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver on May 1 to the outgoing dean.

‘Something that changes students’ lives’

High school senior Marlene Talamantes clearly has a way with words. She spent a day at the University of Colorado Law School and spoke her way right into a trip to Washington, D.C., and a tour of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Before the competition, Talamantes was not sure she would go to college.  Now she sees college as a definite part of her future and plans to pursue a career in teaching or law. 

Colorado business confidence mostly unchanged says CU Leeds School index

 

Colorado business leaders’ attitudes remained almost unchanged going into the fourth quarter, according to the most recent quarterly Leeds Business Confidence Index, or LBCI, released today by the University of Colorado Boulder’s Leeds School of Business.

The LBCI’s reading remained positive, above the critical mark of 50, but fell from 53.6 in the third quarter to 51.6 in the fourth. A reading greater than 50 indicates positive expectations, while one lower than 50 indicates negative expectations.

Engineers Without Borders-USA marks 10th anniversary as CU-Boulder hosts regional conference

 

More than 100 students, faculty and professional engineers from a seven-state region are expected to gather in Boulder Oct. 5-7 to learn about sustainable engineering practices that can benefit the developing world.

The University of Colorado Boulder will host the 2012 Mountain Region Conference for Engineers Without Borders-USA, a nonprofit organization founded by CU engineering Professor Bernard Amadei 10 years ago after he was asked to engineer a water pump for a village in Belize.

CU Law School students and alumni to teach high school students statewide about the Constitution

 

More than 75 students and dozens of alumni of the University of Colorado Law School will teach a lesson on the Fourth Amendment in more than 100 high school classrooms throughout Colorado the week of Sept. 17- 21 in recognition of Constitution Day.

Constitution Day is a national event that annually commemorates the Sept. 17, 1787, signing of the United States Constitution.

CU-Boulder plays key role in global student space experiment competition

Space experiments dreamed up by three teenage winners of an international contest that will be streamed live on YouTube from the International Space Station Sept. 13 were made flight-ready by a University of Colorado Boulder space center.

Continuing Education celebrates 100 years of connecting communities to the University

The University of Colorado’s Division of Continuing Education has come a long way from its humble beginnings in young Macky Auditorium where burlap bags separated staff space in 1912 and the division offered 28 correspondence courses in 11 fields. Today, Continuing Education partners with CU’s academic departments to offer flexible credit courses representing 35 departments and multiple programs granting nontraditional students and community members access to campus.

Michael Radelet, professor of sociology, is an expert on the use of the death penalty in Colorado and the United States. He has documented all of Colorado’s executions and notes that Colorado abolished the penalty between 1897 and 1901, came within one vote of abolishing it again in 2009 and has executed only one person since 1967. “We've always debated the death penalty in Colorado, and the general thrust of our history is in the direction of abolition,” he said.
