CU-Boulder commences search for visiting scholar in conservative thought and policy

The University of Colorado Boulder today announced the start of a national search for the inaugural Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy.

An advisory committee of five faculty members and five community members is soliciting letters of interest and curriculum vitae for the position, which will be housed in CU-Boulder’s College of Arts and Sciences. The committee seeks a “highly visible” scholar who is “deeply engaged in either the analytical scholarship or practice of conservative thinking and policymaking, or both.”

Five University of Colorado Boulder engineering students recently returned from Haiti where they introduced a green energy vocational training program, paving the way for a new era of distributed power in the poverty-stricken, earthquake-damaged nation.

Class act: CU students put a fresh face on math and science education

In an afterschool class of budding scientists, planting vegetable seeds becomes a lesson in how plants grow, cleverly disguised as an afternoon of playing in the dirt.

Amid colorful hand-drawn posters announcing that Franklin, the school’s pet turtle, is missing, 15 five- to eight-year-olds crowd around a table cluttered with vegetable seed packets, bags of dirt and three-inch cups in the cafeteria at Colum­bine Elementary School in Boulder.

Clara Boland didn’t fully appreciate coal’s role in her life until she did some digging. That meant going to Paonia, a small town in Western Colorado, which has mined coal for more than a century.

Boland’s aim was to create a short documentary film for a course on conveying climate science through film. Her journey began in Boulder, where young people called coal “yesterday’s fuel,” dirty and toxic.

Two CU students win prestigious national Goldwater scholarships

University of Colorado Boulder twin sophomores Srinidhi Radhakrishnan and Saikripa Radhakrishnan -- both chemical and biological engineering majors -- have been awarded prestigious Goldwater Scholarships.

The scholarships are worth up to $7,500 for educational expenses each year and are given to students who intend to pursue careers in the fields of math, science or engineering.

First graduates of Colorado Mesa University- CU-Boulder partnership program set to graduate

Nine students who make up the first graduating class of the Mechanical Engineering Partnership Program with Colorado Mesa University will receive degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder this week.

The students have attended classes full time at CMU in Grand Junction, with CMU faculty teaching the lower-division courses and CU-Boulder faculty teaching the upper-division courses.

CU-Boulder names Steven Leigh new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

University of Colorado Boulder Provost Russell L. Moore today named Steven Leigh as dean of CU-Boulder’s College of Arts and Sciences. Leigh currently serves as an associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The appointment is effective July 1.

Committee proposes new CU College of Media, Design and the Arts and companion institute

University of Colorado Boulder Provost Russell L. Moore today formally accepted a report by the Information, Communication, Journalism, Media and Technology (ICJMT) Steering Committee that proposes the creation of a new College of Media, Design and the Arts at CU-Boulder and a companion interdisciplinary institute.

Colorado teachers to learn video game programming with algebra at special CU-Boulder workshop

Middle and high school teachers from across the Front Range will learn how to teach key math concepts to their students while introducing them to video game programming during an April 21 workshop at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Emmanuel Schanzer of Harvard University will lead the workshop sponsored by CU-Boulder’s Department of Computer Science. Schanzer is the creator of Bootstrap, a computer programming tool that uses algebra to create images and animations.
