CU-Boulder researchers use video games to spark kids' interest in coding

In grade school classrooms across the country, students have been hard at work this semester trying to figure out how to smash a virtual frog with a virtual truck. They’re building their own video games—inspired by the 1980s classic Frogger—and there are a thousand details to work out. 

In the end, the students will have built a video game. But more important, the students will have learned how to code—whether they knew it at the time or not.

In just one hour, school kids, teachers and any code-curious member of the public with an Internet connection can now create their own 3-D video game using a tutorial built by a team at the University of Colorado Boulder in preparation for the global “Hour of Code” event happening the second week of December.

Anna & John J. Sie Foundation funds $2 million Daniel and Boyce Sher Distinguished Musicians Endowment

Some of the University of Colorado Boulder’s most promising musicians will receive scholarships thanks to Anna and John J. Sie, who have committed $2 million to establish the Daniel and Boyce Sher Distinguished Musicians Endowment.

Beginning in fall 2014, these Sher Distinguished Scholars (either undergraduate or graduate students) will be awarded full-ride scholarships to the College of Music based on their demonstrated exceptional ability and potential to excel at a national and international level.

Program for Writing and Rhetoric receives national award for excellence

The University of Colorado Boulder’s Program for Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) has been awarded the Writing Program Certificate of Excellence, a national award conferred by the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), the world’s largest professional organization for researching and teaching composition.

CU-Boulder physicist Steven Pollock named a 2013 U.S. Professor of the Year

University of Colorado Boulder physics Professor Steven Pollock has been named a 2013 U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Pollock is the second CU-Boulder faculty member to win a national Professor of the Year award. Nobel laureate Carl Wieman, also a physics professor, was honored with the designation in 2004.

Making the Higher Ed experience more accessible, usable: Accessing Higher Ground conference deadline approaches

Members of the University of Colorado community can receive a 30 percent discount on the registration fees for next week’s Accessing Higher Ground - the 16th annual Accessible Media, Web and Technology Conference, which will be held Nov. 4-8, 2013 at the Westin Hotel in Westminster, Colorado.

“The conference offers a unique opportunity to learn from speakers across the country – and some outside the country, including the keynote speaker – who are leaders in the field of Universal Design and accessibility. The concepts discussed at the conference are not simply about making information, websites and curricula more accessible, it’s about making them more usable, which should be a key goal of any course, product or system,” said Howard Kramer, a proponent of the integration of Universal Design into curricula and a lecturer in Continuing Education at CU-Boulder.

CU study shows unprecedented warmth in Arctic

Average summer temperatures in the Eastern Canadian Arctic during the last 100 years are higher now than during any century in the past 44,000 years and perhaps as long ago as 120,000 years, says a new University of Colorado Boulder study.

Former University of Colorado President Alexander E. “Sandy” Bracken knows a few things about the role that effective leadership plays in career success and life in general.

As the Newton Leadership Chair at CU-Boulder, Bracken has the task – and desire – to bring more leadership training and development opportunities to students across all academic disciplines. One of the major components of this goal is the creation of the Newton Leadership Studies Minor, which will launch in the spring 2014 semester along with a new class (LEAD 1000) titled “Becoming a Leader.”
