As the planet warms, Earth’s climate zones are shifting at an accelerating pace, says a new study led by a scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, a joint venture between the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

When Hurricane Sandy hit Washington, D.C. last October, the usually teeming capitol became a ghost town. Few people braved the whipping winds and stinging sheets of rain on the streets of the nation’s capital. Holed up in his hotel, Laurence Hawker, a CU-Boulder exchange student from Lancaster University in England, witnessed the psychological reactions to an extreme storm that he had up until then only read about.

Ligia Duarte Botelho says her recently-completed internship with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) gave her a rewarding opportunity to explore her interest in different cultures, government, and global health policy.

A junior majoring in international affairs, Botelho, who is originally from Brazil, wants to pursue a career as a diplomat in India or Thailand. She was drawn to the CDC internship because it involved the topics she wants to study in the region of the world she wants to focus on.
