Chancellor DiStefano appointed to Colorado Innovation Network (COIN) advisory board

Chancellor Philip DiStefano was appointed last week to the advisory board of the Colorado Innovation Network (COIN),  that was launched by Gov. John Hickenlooper in 2011 to encourage public-private collaboration in industries expected to create new jobs.

As the new academic year begins, I want to welcome all of you back to the campus community. We have an exciting year ahead – one that promises a remarkable set of changes for the campus that will transform how we do business and in a real sense, who we are.

The good news is that we’ve been on a path toward change and transformation for the last six years via the course we’ve charted with our Flagship 2030 strategic plan. And over the last year, we’ve accelerated the pace of transformation with a number of key initiatives that are altering the landscape of the university.

Chancellor's Corner: OPI takes CU toward a culture of continuous innovation

Here at CU-Boulder, we innovate all the time in our research, teaching and service. What if we applied that same philosophy to the basic ways we do business across the campus?

Last fall at my State of the Campus address, I challenged the campus to collectively and individually innovate – to find new ways to get our work done, and serve our constituents. I challenged our administrators to find ways to build on our efficiencies and to go further in bringing forth new ideas and methods to reach our goals.

Today, I’m delighted to announce that we’re taking an important step in achieving that goal, and embracing this philosophy of innovation through the formation of our Office of Performance Improvement (OPI). The office will be headed by Jeff Luftig, who currently serves as the Lockheed Martin Professor of Management and Director of the Engineering Management Program (EMP) in our College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Here’s a bit of proof.  A new study from the Brookings Institution released a week ago finds Boulder among the top five patent-producing metropolitan areas in the nation.

Several hundred people are expected to gather on the University of Colorado Boulder campus July 12-13 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of JILA, a joint institute of CU-Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) known around the world for its discoveries in atomic, molecular and optical physics. In addition, the president-elect of the American Physical Society will be on hand to officially announce JILA’s designation as an historic physics site.

CU-Boulder Engineering Days to feature egg drop on April 19

Engineering students at the University of Colorado Boulder will host the annual College Egg Drop on April 19 as part of their annual celebration of Engineering Days.

The egg drop, which starts at 1 p.m. on the west side of the Engineering Center, challenges students to create a contraption that will protect a raw egg when dropped from the eighth floor of the Engineering Center’s office tower.

JILA, site of Nobel Prize-winning research, expands into new wing on CU-Boulder campus

Ultracold matter technology from CU and SRI International licensed to Boulder’s ColdQuanta

ColdQuanta Inc. of Boulder and the University of Colorado have finalized an agreement allowing ColdQuanta to commercialize cutting-edge physics research developed by CU-Boulder and SRI International. The licensed technology centers on Bose-Einstein Condensate, or BEC, a new form of matter created just above absolute zero.
