University of Colorado, Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present Fredrick Durrenmatt’s “The Visit,” directed by Roe Green Visiting Artist Jane Page.
A tragic-comedy that could happen anywhere, anytime, the play is driven by the universal themes of revenge and temptation. First published in 1956, the story is about a small depressed German town suddenly faced with a million dollar temptation. Claire, a local girl who’s become a billionaire, returns to her hometown bent on revenge - offering millions in exchange for the execution of her former lover who betrayed her years before. Filled with hatred, Claire quietly says she’ll “wait” when the shocked townspeople refuse her offer. What follows is the slow yield to temptation, and a scathing indictment of the power of greed.
Jane Page, who recently received rave reviews for “To Kill a Mockingbird,” for the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, is a Denver-based freelance director bringing her professional directing experience to the CU stage. Page sets “The Visit” in an American rust-belt town in the “near-now.”
