The MA program has two tracks, thesis and non-thesis. The thesis track requires students to write a substantial research document demonstrating mature critical thought, based on independent study and investigation. The thesis track prepares students to pursue a PhD degree. The non-thesis track requires demonstrating proficiency in academic coursework and a final exam (written and oral).

Academic Work

The minimum requirement for the MA degree is 30 credit hours. A student may complete Plan I, the thesis option, or Plan II, the coursework option. At least 24 hours must be completed at the 5000 level or above; this may include 4-6 thesis hours.

Students choosing Plan I may use the following as a model: 24-26 hours of coursework taken in the first three semesters, including a 3-credit independent study for preparation of the thesis prospectus; and 4-6 hours of thesis credit hours taken in the fourth semester for completion of the thesis.

Students choosing Plan II may use the following as a model: 30 hours of coursework taken in the four semesters, with the written and oral final exam taken during the fourth semester.

Coursework

Required courses for the MA (in addition to thesis hours for Plan I) are:

  • THTR 6009, Research Strategies and Techniques
  • THTR 5011, Theory and Criticism
and two of the following On-Stage Studies courses:
  • THTR 6011, Classical and Neoclassical Drama
