The fifth day of being sick is when most people think they should go to a medical professional for treatment. But hang on! Unless any of the following apply to you, try to wait it out - you will most likely start feeling better in the next few days.

Some symptoms require medical attention, and you should not rely on self-care alone if you experience any of the following:
  • Fever of 101 degrees F or higher
  • Persistent ear pain or discharge
  • Severe headache or pain in cheeks or upper teeth
  • Sudden or persistent hearing loss
  • Congestion lasting longer than 2 weeks
  • Feeling short of breath
  • Chest pain, tightness, or wheezing
  • Difficulty swallowing, breathing, or fully opening your mouth
  • Severe sore throat
  • Skin rash
  • A mild sore throat lasting more than 2 weeks
  • White spots or ulcers on tonsils
  • Symptoms of strep throat and you have had close contact with someone who has had a positive culture for strep
  • Fever accompanied by a rash, severe headache, stiff neck, marked irritability, or mental confusion
  • Signs of dehydration, such as extreme thirst, infrequent urination, dark urine, or light-headedness
  • Cough that lasts longer than 2-3 weeks
