The fifth day of being sick is when most people think they should go to a medical professional for treatment. But hang on! Unless any of the following apply to you, try to wait it out - you will most likely start feeling better in the next few days.
Some symptoms require medical attention, and you should not rely on self-care alone if you experience any of the following:
- Fever of 101 degrees F or higher
- Persistent ear pain or discharge
- Severe headache or pain in cheeks or upper teeth
- Sudden or persistent hearing loss
- Congestion lasting longer than 2 weeks
- Feeling short of breath
- Chest pain, tightness, or wheezing
- Difficulty swallowing, breathing, or fully opening your mouth
- Severe sore throat
- Skin rash
- A mild sore throat lasting more than 2 weeks
- White spots or ulcers on tonsils
- Symptoms of strep throat and you have had close contact with someone who has had a positive culture for strep
- Fever accompanied by a rash, severe headache, stiff neck, marked irritability, or mental confusion
- Signs of dehydration, such as extreme thirst, infrequent urination, dark urine, or light-headedness
- Cough that lasts longer than 2-3 weeks
