Food & Environmental Justice Week: April 11-16, 2011

WHAT IS FOOD JUSTICE?

photo: AP, David Adame

Advocates of food justice maintain that no one should have to worry about where their next meal will come from or go to bed hungry because of social or economic constraints.

Food justice suggests that there is enough food to feed the world, but that individuals do not have fair or equal access to this food. Therefore, food justice requires we not only investigate where our food comes from and what lays behind global food crises and security issues, but that we offer our talents and service to make immediate and long term change.

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE?

photo: unknown

A state of Environmental Justice means that everyone, regardless of race, income, ethnicity, geographic location, etc. must have equal access to a clean working and living environment, including access to clean water, quality food, clean air, energy resources and open space.  The concept of environmental justice grew out of the realization that polluting industries and facilities, such as landfills and power plants, are often located near low-income communities and communities of color.  The recognition that certain communities are disproportionately burdened by pollution and effects of climate change and experience unequal access to resources has informed the Environmental Justice movement.
