Buffalo Can Challenge 2011 - Guidelines and Rules

Main | Guidelines and Rules | Registration | Contributors and Sponsors

1. Only prepackaged, nonperishable cans and food items may be used. Any sized can (big or small) can be used in the structure. Please consider the quality and nutritional value of the food you are donating. This food will be going to people in our community.

2. Only 10 builders at any given time can work on your structure at the build site, but no maximum is set for the size of your team.

3. The structure must be self-supporting

4. Only cardboard, foam board (for leveling), rubber bands, and tape may be used, NO METAL.

5. The cans/boxes cannot be harmed and their labels must remain intact and not be covered! This is important because Community Food Share needs to know what food items have been donated to best serve the community.

6. The structure must be built in an 8'x5'x8' area.

7. On Wednesday, April 13th, teams will build their structures in their designated area at the UMC Fountain. Judging, de-can-struction and loading of donated cans will also take place on April 13th. Building will take place between 9am and 2pm with judging taking place at 2pm.

8. All teams are required to take down their sculpture and move cans to the nearby buff bus for delivery to Community Food Share's Warehouse and then distributed to local people in need.

9. The structure may not be anything you can walk under or through.

10. Stanchions will be provided to keep the public away from your completed sculpture.

Tips on how to get started and participate:

  • Ask your friends, academic dept, classmates, or student group if they are interested in forming a group
  • Once your group is formed, decide on a general design for your sculpture. It can be a statement on the need for more awareness around hunger, the logo of your student group/department, or something fun you want to build.
  • Google for images of "can sculptures." Don't be discouraged if you're not sure how to design an elaborate structure. Or... if you feel ambitious think about asking for help from someone in the engineering or architecture deptartments. on campus, or an architect in the Boulder area. We live in a community full of experts in this area! Many will be glad to help you!
  • After coming up with a group and/or a basic design idea, register online.
