Our Purpose
Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon outstanding students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.
About Us
Sigma Tau Delta is an active honor society which has served the English discipline for over 75 years. With over 550 chapters in large and small, public and private colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe, it is by far the largest--and most active--honors organization in the field.
Sigma Tau Delta, a member of the Association of College Honor Societies, offers unique educational opportunities for English majors and minors, both undergraduate and graduate. Its three primary objectives are to recognize excellence in all areas of English language and literature studies, to encourage further achievement in these areas, and to foster the disciplines of creative and analytical writing. This year alone, active Sigma Tau Delta members will compete for many $2000 international scholarships, several $1000 new-teacher awards, a number of $500-$1000 writing awards, a summer internship position with a well-known Washington, D.C., publishing house, and a graduate assistantship in Sigma Tau Delta's Central Offices. Through these many unique awards and programs, Sigma Tau Delta provides educational and professional opportunities for students that few other discipline-oriented honor societies can offer.
Sigma Tau Delta also provides exceptional professional opportunities for student writers. Many Sigma Tau Delta students present original creative an analytical writing each year at Sigma Tau Delta's fall Regional Conference and at the Spring International Convention. The conferences and conventions provide students valuable opportunities to share original work and to gain confidence in professional presentations. Twice yearly, Sigma Tau Delta publishes an International newsletter and annually produces their award-winning literary journal The Rectangle. These widely-read publications provide active student members exceptional opportunities to publish their work and to compete for Sigma Tau Delta's prestigious international writing awards.
Sigma Tau Delta local chapters provide an excellent means for departments, colleges, and universities to recognize superior undergraduate and graduate students. Chapters encourage and foster a spirit of collegiality among English majors and minors and provide contacts with others, across the country and abroad, with the same interests. Membership in active honor societies such as Sigma Tau Delta brings recognition not only to the individuals but to their respective departments and colleges as well.
The Alpha Iota Sigma chapter at CU was founded by Terry F. Robinson, a CU Graduate Student in English Literature, with the help of Mackenzie Carignan, a CU Graduate Student in Creative Writing, in the spring of 2000. The chapter's members engage in various activities like book sales, candy/bake sales, poetry/short story readings, charity fundraisers, guest speaker presentations, famous author birthday parties, literary discussion groups and more!
