What is public health?
Public Health is the science of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention. Public Health is a fusion of a variety of disciplines, such as biology, sociology, political science, anthropology, medicine, education, psychology, engineering, and business. Professionals who work in the field are concerned with protecting the health of entire populations around the world.
Prevention, the backbone of many Public Health programs, is quickly becoming a buzzword for the medical profession. Public Health professionals implement educational programs, develop policies, administer services, and conduct research to prevent problems from occurring or re-occurring.
How can I make Public Health a part of my life/career?
First of all, please come to our meetings!
One great thing about a career in Public Health is that it is very compatible with other health careers. Many health professionals combine a Masters of Public Health (MPH) with an MD, Ph.D., PA, or nursing degree. About a quarter of all application to MPH programs are MDs, but some come from diverse fields such as business or engineering.
Also, many volunteer organizations such as the Peace Corps don't require any formal training in Public Health to participate.
