HSAC Scholarship::
Due to the lack of financial support, fewer Hmong students are continuing their education after high school. According to statistics from Asian Pacific Islander American Vote (APIA Vote), only 8% of the Hmong in the US have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. Data from the Asian American Justice Center states that nearly 40% of Hmongs nationwide live below the poverty line and have educational levels far below average, some among the lowest in the nation. With these factors in mind, HSAC hopes the HSAC Scholarship Program will become an available source of financial assistance to encourage Hmong youths to pursue higher education.
Nearly a year ago, we developed the HSAC scholarship program to encourage the Hmong youth in Colorado to pursue higher education after finishing high school and also assist those with financial need who would like to attend college. Through many fundraising efforts, our student organization was able to raise enough money to award two applicants for the 2009-2010 school year. The recipients, Wendy Vue and Elizabeth Lor, will be awarded $1,000 each. The success of our first HSAC Scholarship is motivational for our members and advisors to continue the program in the future, as well as continuing to raise funds for future recipients.
