Victoria’s Dirty Secret Campaign

An effort begun and organized by the national forest watchdog group, ForestEthics, the campaign against Victoria’s Secret has been going strong for over two years.  ForestEthics, working in collaboration with other groups (including the Wilderness Study Group) and volunteers around the nation, is employing market campaign tactics to convince Victoria’s Secret and its mother company, Limited Brands, to change their unsustainable business practices.  In short, Victoria’s Secret sends out over 395 million catalogs a year to unsuspecting Americans, with the catalogs being printed on less than 1% recycled paper.  Victoria’s Secret gets the paper for its catalog from trees logged in the endangered Canadian Boreal Forest and old growth forests in the Southeastern U.S. by the logging company International Paper.

WSG has been actively involved in the Victoria’s Dirty Secret Campaign since it began.  We have visited both the Flatirons Crossing Victoria’s Secret store as well as the Denver 16th St. Mall store numerous times, educating the public and Victoria’s Secret would-be customers about the company’s unsustainable practices, and communicating with the store managers and employees everyone’s concerns regarding Victoria’s Secret’s destruction of endangered forests.  The message is getting heard. Victoria’s Secret and Limited Brands are highly anxious about the effectiveness of ForestEthics campaign and its impact on creating a negative public image for Victoria’s Secret. They are now in the process of considering alternative paper suppliers who do not log in endangered forests.  Now is the time to ramp up our campaign activities and push Victoria’s Secret and Limited Brands to make the right choice- For the Forests!

The goals of the Victoria’s Dirty Secret Campaign are to:

  • Cease to renew any contracts with logging companies such as International Paper that destroy endangered forests like the Canadian Boreal

  • Reduce overall and internal paper use

  • Achieve a content of 50% post-consumer recycled within the next five years

  • Use paper suppliers that adhere to the Forest Stewardship Council certifications and that don’t log in endangered forests
