ASME Human Powered Vehicle Team

Who we are

We are under the University of Colorado at Boulder chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and we are designing a vehicle to compete in the 2007 Human Powered Vehicle Competition. The competition requires students to design, test, fabricate, and race a vehicle of their own conception in hopes of developing a faster and more efficient transportation alternative. The goal is to allow the students to explore this problem and creatively come up with the best vehicle for use on the road.

Why we're doing it

The competition is an important learning experience for all the students involved. The project requires us to apply a majority of our engineering knowledge. Design, safety, manufacturing, and performance are a few of the main engineering aspects that need to be considered throughout. The project is run entirely by students allowing us to learn leadership, cooperation and teamwork; vital elements that ensure success in the workplace.

How to get involved

The team always needs new members to help on the project and to continue the team into the future. As a completely student run project, it is important for underclassmen to get involved so that team numbers don’t diminish as seniors graduate. This will be the third straight year that the HPV team has been able to compete and we hope to have the team continue competing as long as competition still exists. The amount of time you dedicate is completely up to you and the project provides new students with an opportunity to learn a wealth of information on composites, welding, fabrication and team work. It also allows students to apply the theory learned in core engineering classes in real world situations.
