BYLAWS FOR CU SHPE/MAES
Article I. Name and Purpose The name of the organization shall be the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the Mexican American Engineers and Scientists of the University of Colorado at Boulder. SHPE/MAES is a non-profit organization dedicated to the recruitment, retention and graduation of Hispanic Engineers. SHPE/MAES also provides opportunities for community building, team participation and individual leadership, which advances opportunities to secure employment.
Article II. Responsibilities and Duties of the SHPE/MAES Ensure all the activities are aligned with the mission statement. Provide resources for recruitment, community building and fund raising. Assist in developing strategy and participating in local, regional and national events. Ensure that SHPE/MAES is perceived as an exceptional collegiate organization.
Article III. Organization The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists form the membership, however the organization is open to any Engineering student at CU-Boulder to participate.
Article IV. Officers Every year in the first week of April, candidates shall submit their names for the following offices: SHPE/MAES President, SHPE/MAES Vice President, SHPE/MAES Secretary, SHPE/MAES Treasurer, and SHPE/MAES Outreach Coordinator for election. PRESIDENT The president shall lead the organization, facilitate all the meetings and ensure all organizational efforts reach their objectives. VICE PRESIDENT The vice president shall assist the president in all organizational matters and in the president’s absence shall assume all responsibilities of the office. The vice president shall assume the responsibility of the vice president of approved by the officers and the advisors. SECRETARY The secretary is responsible for the timely dissemination of all information and correspondence, which includes local, regional and national news. TREASURER The treasurer is responsible for the organizations financial business. A financial statement of the organization shall be received on a quarterly basis. ADVISORS Advisors to SHPE/MAES are voluntary individuals who provide advice and counsel. All elections will be computed by ballot.
Article V. Governance SHPE/MAES is governed by National, Regional and Local (school chapter) guidelines. If a committee is not chaired the president or vice president will appoint an individual or individuals to provide guidance as needed. The committee chair shall schedule and conduct committee activities to the SHPE/MAES organization and officers as needed. Attendance at the Regional and National events will be determined by organizational re-enforcement participation plan and must be approved by officers. Officers are encouraged to attend organizational regional leadership and national events.
Article VI. Meetings SHPE/MAES shall hold at least one meeting per month during the school year. SHPE/MAES officers shall hold at least bimonthly meetings during the school year, which includes an office transition meeting after elections. Committee meetings will be scheduled as necessary to meet objectives.
Article VII. Amendments Amendments to the bylaws may be proposed at any meeting of the membership by majority vote of the members present and voting. Proposed amendments shall be approved by the organization at the regular meeting.
