The University of Colorado in conjunction with Congregation Har HaShem will host a Sudan Awareness Conference on Tuesday, November 1 through Thursday, November 3, 2005 to raise awareness about the atrocities occurring in Darfur, Sudan. With over 1000 attendees expected, the events seek to motivate students and the community to take the steps necessary to put a stop to the genocide in Darfur. All the events are free and open to the public. The press is invited to all events, and interviews can be arranged with speakers.

    How Did it Happen?

    Location: Duane Physics G1B30 Time: 7-9 pm
    Anita Sanborn, President of the Colorado Episcopal Foundation and advisor of the Sudan Council of Churches, will discuss the status of current peace and reconciliation efforts in Sudan followed by a keynote address by Simon Deng, human rights activist and former Sudanese slave.

    Leadership Workshops

    Student Leadership Workshop
    Location: Hellems Building Room 199 Time: 4-5:30 pm
    Jenny Whitcher, experienced activist and leadership trainer, will lead a workshop on how to run an effective student campaign to end the genocide. Open to college and high school students.

    Religious Leadership Workshop
    Location: Humanities Building 1B90 Time: 4-5:30 pm
    Jerry Fowler, Director of the Committee on Conscience for the United States Holocaust Museum, and Becky O'Brien, Sudan Genocide Response Team Coordinator for Congregation Har HaShem, will lead a workshop for clergy and members of the religious community who want to launch an effective response to the genocide in their own congregations.

    Exposing the Genocide

    The Media Speaks
    Location: ECCR (Engineering Center Classrooms) Time: 4-5:30 pm
    A powerful presentation by the School of Journalism on the problems with mass communications in Third World countries. The program will reveal the lack of consistency in the reporting that occurs about places like Darfur and discuss the woeful lack of coverage on this critical issue by the American press that seems obsessed with covering Tom Cruise and the Runaway Bride over a humanitarian crisis.

    Keynote Address: Stop the Genocide Now!
    Location: Boulder High School Auditorium, 1604 Arapahoe Avenue Time: 7-9 pm
    Speakers: Jerry Fowler, Director of the Committee on Conscience for the United States Holocaust Museum and Brian Steidle, former United States marine captain will share his account of his experiences in Darfur.
