Work-study Waitlist Information

Purpose of the Work-Study Waitlist

CU-Boulder receives a limited amount of work-study funding from federal and state sources, therefore not all students who request and qualify for work-study are initially awarded it. The Student Employment Office maintains a waitlist to identify students who did not receive a work-study award, but who are interested in obtaining a job through the work-study program. The waitlist is comprised of students who have expressed interest in work-study, have located a potential work-study employer, and for whom that employer has submitted an Employer Request for Student Work-study form to the Student Employment Office.

You can have your employer submit an Employer Request for Student Work-study form from our website (http://www.colorado.edu/studentemployment/oncamp.html) which will increase your chance to receive a work-study award.

Chances of Receiving Work-Study from the Waitlist

There is no guarantee that you will receive a work-study award by being on either the general or priority waitlist.  It will depend on the funds available to award work-study as well as your financial aid eligibility.  Funds are typically very limited, however, money can become available when students who have been awarded work-study decide not to attend CU or for some other reason, decide not to use their work-study award.  In these situations, the awards are canceled, which may generate money to re-award to students from the waitlist. As the name implies, students on the priority waitlist have a better chance of being awarded work-study than those on the general waitlist, though there is no guarantee in either case.

How the Waitlist Works

The status of work-study funding is reviewed every two weeks.  If funds become available, students on the priority waitlist will be reviewed first.  If we are able to offer you a work-study award, you will first receive an email notifying you of the award, followed by a revised financial aid award notice indicating the amount of work-study you have been awarded.  The general waitlist will only be reviewed in the event that there are still remaining funds after the priority waitlist has been exhausted.

What to Tell Prospective Employers

You should be clear with an employer that you do not have work-study though you may be eligible for an award.  If the employer is interested in hiring you, he or she can submit an Employer Request for Student Work-study thereby placing you on the priority waitlist.  In the meantime, the employer can choose to hire you through hourly employment (non-work-study funds).

Finding Out Where You Are on the Waitlist

Awarding from the waitlist is treated on a “first come, first served” basis, and we will go by the date your Employer Request form was received. There are many criteria to consider when reviewing funding levels; therefore, we are unable to tell you when or if funds will become available.

Impact on Other Financial Aid if You're Awarded Work-Study

Work-study is a type of need-based financial aid and therefore must be incorporated into your existing financial aid award package.  It may be necessary to reduce other financial aid (i.e. loans) to “make room” for a work-study award.  If the loans have already been credited to your university bill, the reduction will create a balance due to the university.  If you are selected to receive a work-study award, we will evaluate your financial aid package and contact you if any adjustments are necessary.  Remember that if you are awarded work-study, it is NOT applied to your University Bill.  You will receive a pay check on a bi-weekly basis to assist with educational expenses incurred throughout the semester.

Other Employment Opportunities Available To Students

The Student Employment Office lists available job postings for all hourly (non-work-study and work-study) on-campus and off-campus positions in CU Connect.  The job postings are updated daily.  The Student Employment Office also operates a computerized Job Match program.  Based on your job skills and the positions available in the Boulder community, you can receive a printout of potential job opportunities.  However, we advise that you contact the employers that you are interested in within a few days of receiving the printout, as some positions may become filled if you wait too long.

Additionally, the Student Employment Office maintains an "On-Call" service, which may provide you with some temporary assistance until permanent employment is secured.  If you have any questions regarding these services, please contact the Student Employment Office.

We have also set up a listserv where students can receive an announcement of the new job opportunities, on-campus and off-campus, that have been posted. To subscribe to the list, please see our website:
