Student Employment Office

The Student Employment Office is located in the Regent 205. Our office helps students locate jobs on and off campus.


Finding Student Jobs

Each year thousands of jobs are posted for currently enrolled CU-Boulder students. The first step in finding a student job is to view the available job postings in CUConnect (the Financial Tab). The job announcements describe the job duties, the qualifications required, the pay rate, the name of the contact person, the department or agency, the location, and the phone number. Job openings are updated daily.

Once you find a job that you are interested in, you should contact the employer directly. They will let you know the process to follow to apply for their job.


Advantages of Working on Campus

Student jobs on campus are open only to currently enrolled CU-Boulder students. Often, these jobs combine good pay and valuable work experience because the job duties relate to your academic major. Supervisors are flexible in setting up a work schedule, and you will often be able to work between your classes. Studies show that students who work tend to make better grades, learn to manage their time efficiently, are more persistent in their goal to graduate, and may have to borrow less in loans to help pay for college expenses.


Types of Student Jobs

Part-time jobs posted during the academic year include jobs on campus, as well as jobs in the Boulder-Denver area. Full-time/part-time summer jobs on and off campus are also posted. The available job postings are on a self-referral system; you choose the jobs that interest you and call to arrange your own interviews.

Student jobs, whether on campus or off campus, fall into three general categories:
  1. Temporary Odd Jobs -- you are hired for short-term jobs or "on call" jobs for special events (e.g. catering, moving, parking).

  2. Regular Hourly (non work-study) part time -- you work a regular part-time schedule, usually 10-15 hours per week, usually will be higher during the summer.

  3. Work-Study -- you work part-time to earn the amount of your financial aid work-study award.


On-Call Employment

Students interested in finding temporary employment can sign up for On-Call Employment. You must be a current CU-Boulder Student. Your name will be added to an email distribution list for the following possible categories: Clerical/Computer, General Labor, and Childcare. As employers contact our office looking for temporary help, we will email their job information to students within the appropriate category. The job information will include: days, times, payrate, location, and contact information.

If you are interested in the position, you will contact the employer directly. To use this service, fill out the On-Call Employment Application and return the form to the Student Employment Office.

You may have your name removed any time by contacting the Student Employment Office at 303-492-7349.


Qualifying for a Student Job

Only current CU-Boulder students qualify for student jobs. Undergraduates must be enrolled for at least 6 credit hours per semester and graduate students must be enrolled for at least 4 credit hours (depending on graduate status).

Only students who receive a work-study award as part of their financial aid package may apply for work-study jobs. To apply for work-study, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or the Renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid early enough that it is received by the processor by CU-Boulder's priority deadline of April 1. Applications processed after that date will be considered for work-study as long as funds are available.


Work-Study Jobs

You must receive work-study as part of your financial aid award package in order to apply for a work-study job. Most work-study jobs are on campus and are as varied as hourly jobs.

The name of the work-study program sometimes confuses students and employers. Work-study does NOT imply that you are allowed to study on the job. You will only be paid for hours that you work. Because of the nature of some types of jobs, you may be required to work when there is "down time". Any personal activity during this time must be requested and approved by your supervisor.

Work-study jobs are also available off campus. Off-campus employers must have a contract with CU-Boulder in order to hire work-study students. For a list of agencies that currently hold a contract with CU-Boulder, stop by the Student Employment Office in Regent 205 or go to the Approved Off-Campus Work-Study Agencies website at http://www.colorado.edu/studentemployment/offcampus/employers.html.

If you do not receive a work-study award as part of your financial aid and are eligible (you have unmet financial eligibility), you may have your name added to the work-study wait list. If work-study funds become available, students on the wait list will be considered for an award; however, there is no guarantee that you will receive a work-study award even if your name is on the wait list. Do not apply for a work-study position unless you have been awarded and have accepted work-study.


Work-Study Dates

Fall Work-study: August 09,2009 - December 12, 2009
Spring Work-study: December 13, 2009 - May 01, 2010
Summer: May 02, 2010 - August 07, 2010

If a student is awarded academic work-study, they must begin earning their work-study award by October 1, 2009 for fall and by February 6, 2010 for spring to avoid award cancellations.


Summer Work-Study

Applying for summer financial aid requires two separate application processes:

  1. Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid by May 3, 2009.
  2. Submit the CU Boulder Summer Aid Application by July 15th. Apply online through CUConnect. Priority deadline for work-study is the middle of March.

Preference for summer work-study is given to those students who had work-study earnings during the academic year.

If you are awarded Work-Study, you must begin earning your work-study award by
Summer 2009: May 30, 2009
Academic Year 2009-2010: October 01, 2009 for Fall semester; February 01, 2010 for Spring semester.
or it will be cancelled.
You may contact the Student Employment Office at 303-492-7349 by the deadline stated above, to place a note on your file to not cancel your work-study award.


Student Retirement Contributions

Any student that must enroll in the student retirement program must complete the Statement Concerning Your Employment in a Job Not Covered by Social Security (SSA-1945) form.

To comply with the Revenue Reconciliation Act of 1990, all students who work for the university may be required to contribute to the student retirement fund. A payroll deduction will be taken from your checks, so you'll need to plan accordingly.

The University of Colorado utilizes a private retirement fund holder as an alternative to Social Security. To comply with IRS regulations, the number of credit hours that you are taking determines whether or not you are required to participate in the student retirement program. According to University policy, a degree-seeking student who is enrolled in at least six credit hours (three for graduate students) in any semester does not have to pay into retirement. Students who are enrolled in fewer hours or who are not degree-seeking are required to pay into the student retirement program. The retirement holder for CU students is TIAA/CREF, and questions about retirement funds should be directed to them at their toll-free number, 1-800-842-2776.

If you are required to enroll in the retirement program, you will contribute 7.5% of your wage for the retirement deduction and 1.45% for the meditax deduction. Assessment of whether or not you must participate in the program will be made at the beginning of each term (fall, spring, summer). Students may only withdraw their retirement contributions upon graduation or withdrawal from the university.


Student Wages

The Boulder campus uses a student classification and pay plan to determine pay rates for student employees. Pay rates range from minimum wage to $19.58 per hour. Your pay rate will correspond to your job classification. Jobs are classified by the skills needed and the level of responsibility required. Pay raises may be given depending on your job performance. Work-study students may not earn more than their award amount and should plan accordingly.

You will receive a paycheck every other Friday, beginning with the second payday after you start working (Payroll Calendar). The amount of your check depends on your pay rate and the number of hours you worked during the previous pay period. To view all previous pay stubs, log into CUConnect and view each payperiod through the 'Pay Advice/Check' link in the 'MyCU Links' portal on the main welcome page.


I-9 Employment Verification Form

Students must complete an I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form within three business days of the date they are hired. Undergraduate and Graduate students are required to go to the Student Employment Office to have this completed. Non-resident alien students must go to Employment Services at 3100 Marine Street (3rd Floor) to have the I-9 completed. Once an I-9 is completed, students are not required to complete another I-9 if they change jobs on campus during their university career.

You must bring the original necessary document(s) with you to complete the I-9 form. A list of acceptable documents can be located on the Payroll and Benefit Services website in the forms section. COPIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED - NO EXCEPTIONS!


Social Security Cards

Payroll Liaisons use social security cards to enter the student’s correct name and social security number in Human Resource Management System (HRMS). To address identity theft concerns, students are not required to provide the University with a copy of their social security card. Departments must however, view the original card to ensure that they enter the correct information into HRMS (see below for information specific to International Students.)

If students do not have social security cards, they can contact the nearest social security office, or visit http://www.ssa.gov/replace_sscard.html and complete the appropriate paperwork to get replacement social security cards. This process can take up to 3 weeks, so we recommend that they do this as soon as possible, even if they have not been hired, but anticipate working for the University

The employing department should NOT copy the original document and forward it to Payroll Benefit Services (PBS). The card should only be used to determine that the data entered into HRMS is accurate. For specific information, please refer to the ‘Social Security Card Filing’ policy at: http://www.colorado.edu/humres/policies/socsec.html?a=51

Note: It is important that you enter the correct social security number on HRMS. Each semester, the Student Retirement Program uses the social security numbers to match the HRMS database with the SIS database. Any mismatches could cause a retirement deduction to be taken, when students are not required to participate.

Reporting Work-Study Hours

On a daily basis, you will fill out a time sheet or use a time clock to report the hours you work. Your timesheet is turned in to your department on a bi-weekly basis. You are paid for actual hours worked (not anticipated hours). Your signature on the time sheet certifies that "the hours and minutes shown herein are a complete and accurate record of time worked each day and for the reporting period." Your supervisor will verify your time sheet and sign it. Any misreporting of hours will be reported to the Student Employment Office, the Judicial Affairs, and the CU Police Department, who will do their own investigations and charge you accordingly. Consult your employer for the exact payroll procedures for your on-campus department or off-campus agency.

Your payroll advice will be available in CUConnect on each payday. Please note: Updating your address with the Registrar does not update your address on the CU Payroll system. If your address has changed, you should change it in CUConnect which will change it in the payroll system. Failure to do so could result in the delay of your paycheck and/or you not receiving your W-2 form in the mail in January.

You are required to set up direct deposit. If you have a checking or savings account, you can have your pay automatically deposited into your bank account. You will able to view in CUConnect an "advice warrant" which indicates the amount of your earnings. Funds are available in your bank account on payday.

Employees who are unable to establish direct deposit must meet the exemption criteria and use the Application for Exemption From Payroll Direct Deposit to arrange an exception.


Federal Community Service Work-Study Program

The Federal Community Service Work-study Program develops, improves, and expands work-study job opportunities related to community service.

Students who wish to participate in this program must apply for financial aid and be awarded a work-study award as part of their financial aid package. Students who are interested in a community service job and have applied for financial aid, but have not been awarded work-study, should stop by the Student Employment Office in Regent 205.

Job opportunities are available with local nonprofit, governmental, and community-based organizations that currently have an off-campus work-study contract with the university. These jobs are designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income residents. Service areas may include: welfare, social services, transportation, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, work in service opportunities or youth corps.

Job openings, when available, are posted on CUConnect (the Financial Tab).


Job Location and Development Program

The Job Location and Development Program (JLD) primarily develops off-campus hourly (nonwork-study) job opportunities for students. Other services include an on-call temporary employment service and a computerized job match system that matches your qualifications and interests with specific jobs. Any student (or their spouse) may use the JLD services in the Student Employment Office Regent 205.



W-2 Information

Want to view and print your previous W2s?

You can now access this information through your own CUConnect account.
The new self service functions of W2 can be found in on the Welcome tab under the My CULinks section.  The link is titled ‘W2 Statement’.

This service will enable you to print copies of your own W2s for the last 3 years (2006, 2007, and 2008).

The information included on the 2008 Form W2 through this portal includes any adjustments that may have been made to your year-end taxable income through March 10, 2009. However, if you have received a Form W-2c to correct past year amounts, you will need to contact Payroll and Benefits Services directly to obtain a reissued copy of that adjustment form.

Form 1042-S, Foreign Person’s Us Source Income Subject to Withholding, is not available through this portal. Please submit a 1042-S Reissue Request to obtain an additional copy of this form.
