General
Information
Posting is prohibited everywhere on campus except on
authorized kiosks, bulletin boards, and other designated
areas. Prohibited areas include the following:
- Light posts
- Windows
- Private dorm areas
- Trash cans
- Building exteriors
- Fences
- Trees
- Restrooms
- Parking lots
- Signs
- Doors
- Classrooms
- Sidewalks
Important considerations about posting:
- Most CU buildings have designated
areas set aside for the display of posters and
handbills. It is your responsibility to ask individual
building personnel where these areas are located.
Materials must be approved for posting by individual
building proctors. The proctor list is available
at the UMC Reception Desk; the SOFO, UMC 231;
the residence halls office, Hallett Hall 40;
and the CU Police Department, 1050 Regent Drive.
- Materials must be removed
within 48 hours after the event has occurred.
- Your organization's name and
phone number must be clearly identifiable on
any posted or distributed material.
- Posters should conform to
size limitations set by each facility. Contact
the building proctor for information regarding
these limits.
- There are a number of display
cases available in campus facilities that can
be utilized for advertising purposes. In the
UMC, display cases are located in the west loggia,
the student office corridor, on the west stairwell
landing and at the entrance to The Connection
games area. Student organizations may schedule
one case each semester for seven days. Reservations
for the UMC display cases may be arranged through
the UMC Business Office, UMC 301, 303-492-8832.
- Press releases (newspapers)
and public service announcements (radio and TV)
are another great alternative or addition to
posting. Your group may receive free publicity
for your event, and the newspaper, radio, or
TV station may even want to do a special feature
about it. Contact the Cultural Events Board,
303-492-3227, for more information.
- Your student group's voice
mailbox can be an effective information-sharing
device.

Chalking
The term "Chalking" refers to the time-honored practice at the University of Colorado at Boulder of using chalk on sidewalks for messages. These messages often concern student elections, student group meetings, Greek rush, political and social commentary, etc. The University supports freedom of expression, while striving to maintain order in a number of ways, including the promulgation of the following time, place and manner regulations:
- Chalking is prohibited inside buildings.
- The University restricts Chalking to exterior sidewalks and walkways that are exposed to natural elements. Chalking is prohibited on building exteriors including walls, doors, windows, facades, roofs, retaining walls, exterior vertical surfaces, benches, surfaces intended for seating, and horizontal surfaces under overhangs or roofs. Do not deface other existing chalkings.
- Use of profanity is prohibited
- Chalking must be done by using stick-chalk or some other substance that quickly fades away with the natural elements within a few days. Use of spray paint and spray chalk is not permitted.
- The University may erase any Chalked messages that do not comply with University policies and regulations.
Any person or organization found to have violated these policies may lose Chalking privileges, may be charged for clean up and/or be subjected to disciplinary action, per CUUF policy.
All chalking must be scheduled in advance with the UMC Events Planning and Catering office in UMC 140.

Posting Violations
The university may ask your organization to pay repair
costs and other fines, perform community service, and
eventually forfeit university scheduling privileges

Recycling
An important reminder: the UCSU Materials Use, Printing,
and Posting Policy requires the use of recycled paper
(minimum 35% post-consumer content) and the use of "readily
recyclable paper" for all student group postings. Astrobrites,
neons, and very deep-dyed papers are all examples of
paper that cannot be recycled in the campus recycling
program, and should be avoided. Campus copy centers
offer a large variety of lighter pastel colors, and
they cost less!
Major printing jobs (consisting of 50 copies or more
and/or any bound or multiple page project) must be
easily recyclable and must contain the highest possible
post-consumer or tree-free paper content possible that
is both readily available and cost effective. If you
have questions about whether your postings are recyclable
call CU Recycling at 303-492-8307.
Thank you for helping to keep our campus beautiful!
