Creating the Respectful Workplace
The creation of a work environment in which all employees feel respected and treated fairly requires a strong commitment to a number of specific actions. It is essential that an organization or work unit engage in the following:

  • Train managers and supervisors in leadership skills, problem-solving strategies and a true understanding of diversity
  • Make sure all employees have current job descriptions and the skills necessary to function in the position
  • Ensure all employees are partners in setting individual performance goals
  • Utilize a performance appraisal system that includes employee input and evaluation
  • Ensure problems and concerns are addressed in a timely manner
  • Institute two-way communication at all levels of employment
  • Foster good relationships between supervisors and employees
  • Ensure that institutional responses to questions and requests are culturally sensitive and appropriate
  • Institute collaborative problem-solving strategies
