Join us for free coffee, tea and breakfast snacks plus stimulating discussion of The Color of Wealth: The Story Behind the U.S. Racial Wealth Divide. Part 1 will focus on how Native Americans have often been “land rich and dirt poor” because of the challenges they have had to face with asset building. Reading not required for participation. Discussion geared to the graduate level, but all are welcome.

Feb. 9 Crossing Borders Through Books : The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Join us for light lunch and thought-provoking discussion of this New York Times best-seller which tells the true story of how a poor African American tobacco farmer’s cells were taken and used without her knowledge or consent for critically important medical research. Her cells are still alive though she’s been dead for 60 years.

Feb. 10 Graduate Teaching Program Workshop: Classroom Power Dynamics and Cultural Differences

How comfortable people are with hierarchy and its inherent power divisions can vary significantly according to their cultural identities. We will explore the range of power-distance orientations observed across cultures, as well as challenges and implications emerging from those differences in university classroom settings.

The stories are a mixture of outrageous humor and heart-breaking realities of life on the reservations, as lived by Alexie and his characters.
