Diversity Education Team (DET)
DET is composed of professionals from diverse backgrounds experienced in diversity education and covers a myriad of diversity topics through a variety of learning experiences ranging from introspective to mini-lectures to small group interaction. In most cases, the format combines content information with experiential or interactive activities.
Mission
The Diversity Education Team (DET) supports CU-Boulders Diversity and Equity Plan by facilitating the development of a university community that values diversity, enhances quality education and personal growth, and promotes an inclusive environment in which
- all of its members are able to successfully pursue their educational goals in a manner that is respectful of themselves and of others;
- all are valued for their contributions to the academic community, and
- all benefit from continual dialogue and exchange of diverse ideas, methods, and perspectives.
Philosophy
The teams approach to developing a university community that values diversity involves enhancing the awareness, understanding, and appreciation of ones self and of others as individuals and as members of diverse cultural groups. Educative DET offerings involve increasing ones self-awareness, acquiring knowledge, building relationships, and enhancing skills in developing multicultural competencies. Diversity may include, but is not limited to, academic discipline, gender, race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, age, and religious faith.
Goals
The primary goal of DET is to educate the Boulder campus communityfaculty, students, and staffby
providing learning opportunities to explore various diversity issues on both
the individual, as well as the institutional level. These opportunities are
provided through individual consultation and/or through experiential, interactive
group work, such as training, workshops, and seminars.
Making a Request
Interested individuals, groups, or departments making a DET request may choose:
- a combination of topics and activities listed under Offerings
- to develop, in collaboration with DET, what best fits their diversity needs and goals.
Confidentiality of individual participants and departments is honored.
Please contact the DET Coordinator for more information, to schedule an intake appointment, and/or to request one or more of the offerings listed. An intake may be conducted over the phone or through email, although a meeting in person is preferable. The intake involves an exchange of relevant information (e.g. time frame available), description of audience characteristics and dynamics, and identification of diversity issues, needs, and goals. The team makes an assessment and conducts follow-up communication and collaboration, working closely with the requestor during the development phase of the request.
