Wolf and Wilderness

BOTH SESSIONS ARE FULL. You may add your name to the wait list at no charge by contacting debra.kulcsar@colorado.edu

Black Wolf

A long-time favorite, this week is the perfect experience for budding wildlife biologists, veterinarians and geologists. We start out near Gardner, Colorado at Mission:Wolf, an education center and peaceful wolf sanctuary. M:W is home to nearly 40 wolves living in enclosures with their pack-mates. During our stay we will learn about wolf biology, observe the wolves in their natural habitat, and participate in meaningful service projects assisting the volunteers in their wolf care-taking responsibilities. Kent Weber, Executive Director and long time friend, will share his expertise about wolves, reintroduction issues, and the importance of large predators in our ecosystems. We"ll learn the difference between our beloved pet canines and wolves and meet the ambassador wolves up close and personal. Every morning the howling of canis lupus will wake us and at night will serenade us to sleep. The time will come to leave the mountain meadows of Mission:Wolf and travel to the high desert of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. A hike down the Mosca Pass Trail will reveal the San Luis Valley with the magnificent sand dunes piled high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We end the week frolicking on the dunes and in Medano Creek where we witness, first hand, the effects of shifting wind, water and sand. A ranger-led hands-on talk will highlight the unique animals and plants that have adapted to this austere and beautiful land. Get ready for an exciting week of learning, fun and new friends!
