History
- Science Discovery began in 1983 as a pilot program of 10 summer classes
at Fiske Planetarium located on the campus of the University of Colorado
at Boulder. under the direction of Fiske's Director, David Aguilar.
- In the fall of 1983,Carol McLaren joined the staff at Fiske to oversee the development of the program.
- In 1985 the program became known as Science Discovery and part of the School of Education, with Carol McLaren as its Director. Classes continued to be held at Fiske Planetarium and over the years, Fiske provided office space for the growing program.
- In 1986 Ellen Brock joined the staff of Science Discovery serving
as associate director and coordinator of the summer and after-school
class programs.
- In 1988 Science Discovery initiated the Science From CU program of
classroom presentations to students statewide. It started with four
presentations and now offers 22 diverse science presentations, which
feature faculty research. Science From CU reaches over 22,000 students
annually.
- In 1988 Science Discovery launched the Science Explorers program,
providing professional development for teachers while engaging their
students in a day-long workshop with hands-on activities. Currently
this program is offered in 20 locations around the state of Colorado
and reaches over 400 teachers and 2,000 students.
- In 1989 Science Discovery began the wilderness camps program. Camp
locations have included: Mission: Wolf, The Great Sand Dunes, Dinosaur
National Monument, the San Juan Mountains, and others. The camps program
directors,
Deb Kulcsar and David
Darst, have been with the program since it started.
- In 1994 the summer class program outgrew its space on the CU-Boulder
campus. Since then classes have been held at Flatirons Elementary School,
The Bridge School, Douglass
Elementary School and Friends' School. More than 190 classes are
offered for students ages four to 14 years.
- In 2000 Science Discovery moved its offices from the Fiske Planetarium
to another university building at 1540 30th Street, Boulder, Colorado and in beginning in 2004 Science Discovery is housed on the CU east campus, Science Learning Laboratory, 3400 Marine Street, Boulder.
- In December 2005, Science Discovery paid tribute to its founding director, Carol McLaren Schott, who retired after 22 years of exceptional leadership and contribution to science education.
- In January 2006, Science Discovery welcomed Jeffrey Kidder as new director, who came to us from Rutgers University where he served as the Director of Science Outreach.
- In 2006-2007, Science Discovery will serve over 30,000 students and
1,500 teachers statewide.
