"I get obsessed with things. Postmodern Day Davey Crockett is the product of
one of my obsessions. There was a period when I was reading a lot of Nietzsche and American history. During this time I was thinking about the idea of the Ubermensch. Somehow my mind kept correlating the idea of a superman with hereos of the frontier. Davey Crockett stood out as a particularly colorful and comical character. So, I started playing with the notion of modern day Davey Crockett being a sort of Ubermensch/secret agent. What would Ubermensch Crockett do in modern society? What would he be like? So, I compiled a list of modern and historical traits. But I wasn't sure how to organize them. At the time I was working with a graphic artist, and we had plans to develop a comic strip around the idea. Crockett would wear a business suit and coon-skin cap, and practice master morality in all sorts of modern day situations. For example, he
would butt in line at smoothie shops because waiting in line is for those who
subscribe to slave morality. But the comic fell through for reasons I won't go
into. Then, one night inspiration struck (it always seems to strike at night for
me). I realized that modern day Crockett should be postmodern day Crockett,
and in the spirit of postmodernism the poem should be jumbled rather than
narrative. The result was Postmodern Day Davey Crockett. If there are any artists
out there interested in working on the comic please e-mail me."
