"While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see."

Dorothea Lange

As a writer, I have found that it is often difficult to put exact words to a story. Sometimes it is difficult to capture the intended meaning or feeling, difficult to sort through the pieces and find what is true. As a photographer, I have found that photographs allow us to see stories from a different angle. There is less explaining with photography. In many ways, the photograph speaks for itself. Just as with words, we can take them at face value, or we can look closer. We can choose to keep our distance, or we can dive in head first and swim with the subject.

The theme of truth speaks loudly to photography. There are questions of the photo's purpose: Is it to persuade us? To reveal to us? To protest? To express the voice of the photographer? To express the voice of the subject? The voice of a people or a country? How is the viewer to know the true meaning of a photograph? Are images presented in the media accurate representations? These are just some of the many questions that photography provokes us to think about as it challenges our ideas of what is true.

"There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth." - Richard Avedon
